I absolutely believe you can train your mind to do whatever you want, if there is a will, there is a way!
Many people have been taught to learn to draw. Sometimes drawing is natural, but you can learn also!
This is absolutely unbelievable what I am about to tell you...
20 years ago a friend of mine told me she heard people could move things with the power of their mind. She said she practiced doing it on a feather then moved to larger objects. I don't know how long it took her, a couple weeks I think, she was able to move objects with her mind, she couldn't control the strength. She never used after developing it, it frightened her. We sat at her kitchen table, she said look, there was a big, plastic comb on the table, she placed it in front of her and looked at it, it flew off the table, across the room (VERY FAST) and smashed against the front door and fell to the floor.
So, yes, I think people Can train their mind to do things, even bizarre things like I just described above, as unbelievable as it sounds it is ABSOLUTELY THE TRUTH.

well have you ever heard of Betty Edward's "Drawing on The Rights Side of The Brain"? This book inspired me so much, that I write my dissertation on the brain and learning arts...now in any case, Betty edwards wrote her book in 70's when we could not measure brain functioning very punctually. Actually teaching method she suggests works even though the theory of it is not exactly as she sais! I find this interesting!
In the last year many reserches were made on mesuring the visual learning in the brain, and I am sure that in near future we will be more smart how to use this knowledge in the classroom as well.

It's relative to the circumstance. For one thing most people learn via observation/example (IE artistic influence), so do you consider observation/example training?

Given your example, Drawing and Painting, then I would have to say yes b/c you sited "Formal" training.

If you were to say that observation/example were training, then I would have to say no.

One good example of this is the young Yodeler on America's Got Talent. She trained herself to Yodel via a cassette tape...no formal training....eventually she made it onto national TV. So, yes it can be done - No it couldn't be done without the tape.

Number one, check your grammar (no one THOUGHT us?). How about no one 'taught' us.

Number two, of course this is possible, and it occurs all the time. In order for an art form to be passed on from one generation to the next, something had to be created uniquely before. Now this education evolution may not always occur in leaps in bounds, like in early mathematics, astronomy, and physics (pythagoras, galileo, newton, etc.), but it is constantly happening. The newest wave would be computer programming, in which people are constantly coming up with new ideas no one taught them, and making billions of dollars off of them.

We don't teach our brains, we exercise it. And, art is not something you show other people how to do. It is personal, coming from the heart and mind and we all "know" how to do it. Those who expose themselves to others' way of making art may adopt other's discoveries into their own patterns, and they find out how complementary colors work...but they already can draw and paint...all they need to do is to do it.
