I have two cats. One of them is really good about the litter box, but the other one is very haphazard. She drops her mess on the rim of the box so half goes in and half goes out, or she leaves her mess on the carpet, or she pees on magazines. Sometimes she buries her mess and sometimes she just leaves it lying out. Her box is clean, and we've tried getting two boxes so each cat can have its own territory, but the problem isn't abating. This cat is a feline leukemia carrier, so we can't give her away or send her to a shelter, because she would be put down. Any suggestions would be welcome.

My cat recently had litter box problems. My problem was that I was using too harsh disinfectants to clean it, a litter box liner, AND deodorizer mixed with the litter. He didn't care for any of it. SO, if you're using chemical cleaners or deodorizers, OR litter box liners, stop and see if that helps. Try using Oxy-Clean Free to clean the box instead.
If those aren't the issues, then try different litter, or try moving the litter box to the area where the cat is going instead.

Try a different cat litter. Some cats are picky. Dome like clay litter and others like clumping or crystals.
I had the same problem with the mess hanging on the edge of the cat box. You can get one with a hood or get a bigger box. I have a very large plastic tray (kind you buy used for storing clothes under your bed) that I use. It keeps cleaner and the cat has so much room to move around and bury her mess. It works so much better than any cat litter box you buy. But I am lucky to have a bottom shelf in a open storage area in my laundy room. This provides the privacy and no lid is needed. You can create a large 3 sided box for privacy out of ply board. Make what you need and make it their special potty room.

Cats are sensitive some people would tell you, make it smell its dump and flick the nose . But the best way is use a water pistol. Spray her lightly when she is doing something wrong or you can use a can and put some coins in it and shake it when your cat is littering they don't like the noise hope i helped
