I am an atheist, but not a satanist.......I ask the question because that is what I have heard.

the Lavey satanist as you call them are quite commonly called atheist since they do not believe or even follow the real satan but a set of rules that they are given by lavey in his teachings. so if you ask me most of the lavey satanist are atheist for they do not follow a god

Yes. For his birthday one year, I gave my husband (who is an atheist) a copy of LaVey's Satanic Bible. When he finished reading it he said, "Wow. I'm a Satanist and never knew it."

He doesn't label himself that way - but it doesn't offend him when people call him a Satanist.

From what I have gathered in my discussions with LeVey Satanists, it isn't as much about intellectualism as it is about ritualizing hedonism. There are tenets of Satanism that require faith, and so I think that makes it a real religion.

Somewhat. It's basically atheism with extra philosophy and a plain understanding of magickal principles.
