I have had this cat for 3 years. It has always been skittish. Suddenly he has started hissing and spitting at me. He is a big cat and I am actually scared of him now. I feel that he is going to really attack me and hurt me one day soon. What can I do to stop him from acting like this?

When he hisses at you, grab him by the scruff of his neck and lift him off the ground. This establishes you as the alpha-dominant in his litter. It may take a few times to get this through your cat's head, but I've found it works like a charm.

He might be sick. I would suggest taking him to the vet. Good luck catching him and not getting hurt!
If he's healthy and just a nasty cat, I think it's best you try to find a new home for him. It's upsetting to have give a pet away but your safety is top priority. I don't think it's a good idea to keep him.
If you really want to work things out with kitty, ask your vet for advice on what options you have. There might be some rescue orginazations in your area that can help you with either finding a new home or help you to TRY and teach your cat to be nice. Most likely won't work though. :(
Good luck and I wish you the best!

He just sounds really scared for some reason. You may need to take him to a vet. Any sudden change in behavior can be a sign of something wrong.

If you are scared to go near him you can set a live trap. But it does sound like there might be something wrong with him. If it ends up being nothing and you are still frightened of him, I suggest that you give him to a humane society.

Have you brought home a new pet or boyfriend? Both can cause trouble like you have written. I had a b/f that was kicking my cat when I wasn't looking, the cat's personality changed 100%. It's either the above or the cat has rabies.

Well make sure you're nice to him, or you will make it worse.
Also, use a water bottle for training, that always works. But, don't use it too much, or you will just make him more mean.
Get him some toys. Get him some catnip.
If he bites, it won't be that bad. Don't worry.

Try disciplining him using a water squirt bottle. If that dosen't work get him fixed.

Please call your veterinarian and discuss a behavior consult. You need profession intervention if you want to fix this situation. and if you decide its not worth your time, please do not place an aggressive cat in another persons home, because that opens you to a liability suit and is very negligent behavior.

Is he spayed? That might help calm him down.
