The following cameras are coming under your specs
1. Sony DSC H5 (7.2MP,12x Optical Zoom)
2. Sony DSC H2 (6MP,12x Optical Zoom)
3. Sony DSC H1(5MP,12x Optical Zoom)
4. Canon S2 IS (5MP,12x Optical Zoom)
5. Canon S3 IS (6MP,12x Optical Zoom)
6. Lumix DMC-FZ7K (6MP,12x Optical Zoom)
7.Nikon Coolpix S10 (6MP,10x Optical Zoom)

All these cameras are coming under $400(Except DSC-H5). In my opinion, go for Canon S3 IS. It has more features than others and it is the best in Camera World

During the years of film cameras I always had a Canon, and I loved them. When digital became the norm, my husband bought me a Nikon Coolpix. It was okay, sort of complicated. Then the battery door broke. It cost too much to invest in fixing it. I really never loved this camera. I am in the process of picking out a new Canon. I've also seen great pictures from Sony cameras. But I will probably go with a new Canon.

Hi,
I shop a lot and to save time and money I use cheapest prices search engine. Almost every merchant is there and over a million consumer written reviews. You will find many other ways that will help you with questions.
You can shop online or you can go to a merchant and use the toll free phone number if you feel more comfortable shopping like that.
There are merchant reviews, product reviews, compare by brand and a lot more. I hope I helped you and I wish you good luck.

i like both the brands you've mentioned. but i prefer canon. i bought a Sony t-series and i'm not too happy with it. apparently canon makes their own lenses that's why the clarity of their pix are better. but what's important is the zooming, the higher the optical zoom the better. i didn't know that when i bought my sony dsc-t1. what attracted me more to it is it's so compact. i should have looked into it more. but it's alright. well, i guest it just has to be. darn thing cost me and my husband more than $500CAD.

Yes. Sony, Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, and Fuji are all fine brands.

I cannot truly say what the best cameras are because I only have ever used my two Nikon cameras. I do know someone who has Canon and she let me use it. I did not really like it. I really like Nikon cameras. Of course, the two Nikons I have are probably out of your price range.

I have a Canon SD450. It's a great camera, very fast, easy to learn and great user interface. I used to have an Olympus and it wasn't as good as the Canon.

If not the best, then at least the most popular.
