I often hear Christians saying that God or Jesus speaks to them. How exactly does that work?

HE speaks to me in many different ways. Through the Holy Spirit in many different forms and ways.
Many ways such as:
1. In my dreams at times.
2. in my own thoughts other times, and
3. by the Angels who are living around us at other times.
All you need to do, is open your heart and mind, and you may hear Him speaking to you in a best way to reach you.
Have you ever thought why you did something that prevented you from getting hurt later, or helped you in doing something! it is God, or one of his Angels helping you out, and you didn't know it!
All you need to do is pay attention. You are not alone. God Speaks to you all the time, just listen.

I have asked this question to my Sunday School teacher recently and this is the answer I got. Hope it helps...
We believe in the Holy Trinity: The Father (God), The Son (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the part of the Trinity that talks to us...it's like God & Jesus' mouthpiece. We pray to God/Jesus which is our way of talking to them. When we say our conscience is telling us something, it's really the Holy Spirit talking to us. When we feel an urge to (for example) call someone to see how they're doing, we're told that's the Holy Spirit talking to us and leading us in the way God wants us to go.

Yes God can speak to it's righteous people, but Jesus cannot, because he is not God, and he passed away from this earth as any other human being.

Yes, through the Holy Spirit. Jesus told his followers before he was crucified that he would send the Holy Spirit to be with them (us) after he was gone. He referred to H.S. as counselor, helper, spirit of truth, etc. I have learned to "listen" for God's voice through the H.S. by spending quiet time alone with God, getting to know him by reading the Bible, singing the Psalms, etc. God delights in hearing us talk to him (prayer) and is thrilled when we listen for his response to us! :)
