What difference do you think it would make to the world if the prevailing opinion of heaven/hell were replaced with the following?
As a Latter Day Saint (AKA Mormon), I believe that after the final judgement and resurrection, God wants to give us all that we will then be prepared to receive. Here's the point: Everyone receives a degree of glory. (Compared to sun, moon and stars, 1 Cor 15:40-42) Even the least is so beautiful we'd fall over eachother to get there. The kicker is, that if we didn't prepare in this life, we'd be wailing and gnashing at our bad decisions, and how we might otherwise have had it all.
I got to wondering about how the world might differ if this were the prevailing belief (Muslim and Christian alike). With Heaven/Hell/ one dividing line, if we're wrong we go to hell, making us defend our position so much more vehemently. I imagine - even if faiths still varied elsewhere - that we might be more tolerant if the proposed view were prevailing opinion.

It obviously would be different if everyone believed the same...can you imagine if everyone was LDS, faithfully? What a world that would be and WILL be some day.
It is interesting that it is said, as you pointed out, even the Telestial Kingdom, the lowest besides outer darkness, is so wonderful that we would almost kill ourselves just to get there!!
Can we even imagine how wonderful the Celestial Kingdom will be??? It gives me great comfort to know that we have that opportunity.

I think that people's present life is affected by their view of the afterlife.
As an LDS, you can't believe in the final judgement because there is so much more that comes with works that you or others do for you. Some stores tell you "no sale is ever final" and the same thought goes with the Mormon church on salvation.
As an LDS woman the pressure upon you is great because the LDS church teaches that you can only be called forth by your husband at the end. If your husband is not worthy to be called forth, you won't be either. That is why there is a whole study in psychiatry on depression in the Mormon woman.

I dont understand your last comment about faiths varying and tolerance. The tolerance is about smaller things.
This is a big thing that you are talking about here and it is an integration of the basics of salvation and everything.
As a Christian, the view of the afterlife is how we get to heaven. The Bible tells us that we are unable to enter heaven on our merits and that our righteousness is as filthy rags. We enter via the righteousness of Christ. That does not allow us to do whatever we wish as the Mormons teach about us (see "sloppy agape" and "greasy grace") Such a position does not take into account Romans 6:1,2 which is something that Christians believe.

I don't believe in heaven/hell or any other type of "afterlife". I live life everyday to the fullest and will continue to do so until it is over. Life is what you make of it right here, right now.
