It depends on the god.

If God is loving, then you don't need to do anything to prevent yourself from going there. God loves you, and he wouldn't dream of sending you to Hell (or allow you to go there, which is equivalent to sending you to Hell). No loving creature could wish such torment on someone. So, do nothing, and you don't go to Hell.

Now, if God is callous enough to send you to Hell, then he is not a god to be trusted. A creature who is cruel enough to send people to Hell has no value on human consideration. If you cannot trust this god to have morals, then you cannot trust this god to keep his word when he says that faith in him will save you from Hell. So, doing something to prevent yourself from going to Hell may just be as effective as doing nothing to prevent yourself from going there. You can't trust the callous god.

Still, many people believe in a Heaven based on how good of a person you are. In that case, good deeds should be enough. Karma and reincarnation can spin off some interesting variants.

How can you beleive in God and think that when you die you go straight to heaven or Hell? What need is there for a resurrection if eveyone is already judged
1 Thess 4:13-18)
Now if Christ is preached that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen.
NKJV

1 Cor 15:21-24
21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ's at His coming. 24 Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.
NKJV

Rev 20:5-6
5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.
NKJV

Who can say if we have a choice or not? I try to live a good life, obey God's commandments, and be kind to others, but I fall far short of perfection. Besides hell can be interpreted as a myriad of possibilities. Hell for me would be the ending of all progression and learnimg. To be left for eternity just as I was the moment I died would be so boring and distressful. I want to always be learning and progressing and discovering.

I do what I can to stay out of Hell. I go to church, I pray, I try to live my life as a good Catholic. I've even had a few of my pagan friends come with me to church (no, I didn't make them, they did that on their own) and I've spread the word of God in my own way (by not shoving it down anyone's throats and talking respectfully about Him). I can probably do more, and I do try.

IF you believed in Hell, then your question could make sense.

There is only one hell, and it is right here on earth and unfortunately many people are living in it.

I don't believe in hell, so that isn't a problem for me.

Maybe they don't *really* believe in it...

Or maybe they think too highly of their deities to think they're so rotten as to send people to such a place.
