A cult usually has a main person as a leader whose word is law. The leader's word is held in the highest regard over anyone else and even over the Bible or Jesus if it is an off shoot of Christianity. Every other religious church or group is seen to be wrong and that cult sees itself as the only true group of the faithful. Often the cult has a few pet doctrines that they emphasis and identify with. Sometimes the cult actually has a often neglected true doctrine or practice which they emphasis and makes them seem as a legitamite group. The leadership is usally on a power trip and want to control everybody's lives and finances up to the most personal things. Teachings against the diety of Christ or salvation other then through Jesus are common to cults. Some use other so called holy books or writtings as their standard and often put down the Bible as being obsolete. There are often beliefs that justify breaking the law against biblical rule also. Only someone who has the courage to act on what they know to be true has a chance to break out of a cult once they are a part of one. God can give them that courage. It is even harder to break away if the group has a communal living arrangement with other cult members. To avoid falling into a cult or to escape one there must be a primary trust in the Bible which is God's word instead of any man's word. A good Bible verse to remember is "The fear of man brings a snare but whoever trusts in the Lord sall be safe" from Proverbs 29:25.

One of the main signs of a cult is active recruitment of new members. For instance Mormons and Jehovah's witnesses spend significant energy on recruiting new members. Also most cults have an "us against them" mentality which is very inflexible. David Koresch and Jim Jones are two good examples of this. Many cults, such as Hinduism and Catholicism, seek to control entire societies by setting up "divine" control structures.
There are cults within all major religions but I believe true divine intervention comes to each on an individual basis and that getting caught up in human group activities mostly interferes with divinity.

By definition a "cult" is a group that seeks to isolate members. They tend to draw in the dysfunctional, those without family or friends. Then they isolate them.
The reason for isolation is a fragile belief system. If they took their belief system out into the general public, it would crash like a house of cards.
True cults tend to use brainwashing techniques. These usually work best with liberal amounts of sugar, which weakens the mind and thought process. Hence Kool-Aid and candy are freely distributed.
Is it any wonder that "high fructose corn syrup" - one of the most toxic additives ever created - is in all our food?
But that doesn't stop said general public from viewing any organization that teaches ideas different from their own as a cult.
Said general public tends to see anything that differs from their collective view as "strange" and thereby "cultish."
So you see, the true definition and the public definition are very different. Must be a cult!

any organizations/religions/gatherings becomes a cult when its local leaders put the faiths/beliefs/doctrines into their hands, establishes an added law suited to their needs, to be observed by the believers. When the believers are comfortable, liked the by laws/condition/situation in the institutions, when they believe fully/wholeheartedly of what the leader speaks, when the leader have so much confidence that he had their blind faith in his hand, coupled with evil-inspired suggested pride...then the leader takes the opportunity to control everybody`s life...to do as he pleases! with evil guidance...and that`s the start of cult-ism.

Muslims believe that Islam is the only religion. Simply, man is for laws, laws are not for man. That''s why muslims can mutilate even a hungry child's hand for stealing a bread piece. Christianity is not crual as Islam. islam is a curse to moden world.
