If it wasn't white, was this your first marriage and how old were you?

Also I am asking if it's a first marriage because I have always been told that you should only wear white if it's your first marriage. I know there's no iron clad rule...but just wondering if it plays a part with brides that have married 2 or more times.

i wore a white gown when i married m husband 9yrs ago i was 21 but we renewed our wedding vows on our 5th wedding anniversary when i was 26 then i wore an ivory raw silk dress it was plain no detail. it had a thigh length split on the left side at the front it had a pure silk strip across the bust and it had two pearl clips that attached to the shoulders with two strands of chiffon attached to it. i actually prefered that to my first dress which was white with huge ruffles and a 3t train.
not all brides where white for a first marriage my brothers wife wore ivory and gold. wearing white for a first wedding is just what some people do its a tradition but not everyone does it and it doesnt matter what you wear as long as you are happy

In this day and age brides get married in every color under the sun (even have seen ONE bride that wore black with a white sash!). I have also planned many 2nd marriages in which the bride wore white. Queen Victoria was the "catalyst" that made white gowns famous. White (in general) was considered a sign of purity (a virgin). These days brides are not expected to be virgins. If you want to get right down to true "Tradition" many brides prior to the Queen Victoria wore BLUE for their wedding dress!

My point is, dont let tradition or someone's expectations dictate your dress.... choose anything YOU like and that looks good on you.

Good Luck!

P.S. (to MysticIdeas) I am sorry to hear of your loss (no matter how long ago or recently it happened) You are a strong woman, you pulled through. I hope you find more happiness in your future "to overfill your cup".

Screw anyone who tells you you can only wear white (or ivory if you've had children or are getting married a 2nd or 3rd time). White was introduced in the 1800s by Queen Victoria as a sign of wealth, not virginity or anything related. Only royals could afford a dress they would never wear again in their lives. Prior to that, a woman wore her best dress to get married, which was often a jewel color (sapphire, ruby, emerald, etc). The color of her dress signifying her sexual status was never even an issue.

Most medieval themed brides wear jewel tone colors and there are several websites out there that sell colored wedding dresses and they look gorgeous.

I refuse to wear white or ivory (or any other shade of ivory that is called pink or whatever that really isn't) because those light colors wash me out incredibly and make me look dead. I have to wear bright/dark colors. There's no way around that.

First time I got married in a short white dress (not a gown). 2nd time we eloped in Vegas, and I wore just a regular summer dress, black with small white flowers. 3rd time it was a Renaissance/pirate-themed wedding, and I wore a pale green brocade renaissance gown, with black velvet trim and bell sleeves that hung down to the ground. I think, nowadays the bride can wear whatever she wants, no matter how many times she had been married before.

I got married in a white dress with small pink flowers all over it. It was my first marriage and I was 21. The dress was beautiful unfortunately the marriage wasn't.

I have been married 32 years. My wedding dress was light blue. My mother made it.
A few weeks ago, the daughter of a dear friend got married in my back yard. She wore a lavender gown, very pretty and classy.
Both were first (and I hope only) weddings.

in medieval times, brides wore blue for weddings a lot. this is what i'm doing. i'm going to have a dark blue gown wiht some white on it. it's my first wedding. pretty much, if you want to wear a colour, you should. besides, wwhite wasn't a popular colour for weddings until Queen Victoria got married in white. but that's mostly only for western weddings. I've heard that in oriental weddings, red is a popular colour because it symbolises good fortune!

Last year I got married in New Orleans...wearing a pink Jessica McClintock dress....strapless with a corset top, and a full tulle floor length skirt. I wore a tiara with a veil, and carried a feather and sequin mardi gras mask with me...in white. I wore sneakers for partying on Bourbon Street after the wedding.

I was 32 and yes, it was my second time around...although I don't think that matters.

I got married at the Justice of the peace so I wore a red sweater because it was valentines day. My marriage lasted longer then most church weddings and we did not have to spend as much as a traditional wedding.
