Lean and toned means two things: 1) lower body fat and 2) better muscle tone.

Lower body fat is accomplished through a combination of increased aerobic and anaerobic activity and healthier diet. Better muscle tone is best accomplished through strength and resistance training, and aerobic activity (to a lesser degree).

If you haven't already, modify your diet to get rid of the refined sugar. Also cut out simple carbs like white bread, white rice, pasta. Replace with meat and tofu (if you like it), and lost of vegetables.

As far as aerobic activity, incorporate daily (or every other day) cycling, walking or running. I suggest cycling because it's easier on the knees and joints than running, lets you see more scenery in the same amount of time, and I find it more enjoyable. Start at 30 min. a day - that's really simple - just ride away from your house for 15 minutes, then turn around...there's 30 minutes. Work up to 60 minutes a day at a comfortable pace, then work on gradually increasing average speed. That will do wonders with your overall body fat in a very short period of time.

Finally, add to that a regular strength treating routine. Always concentrate on form more than how much weight you can lift. Make sure you work very slowly on the negative stroke...more micro tearing occurs in muscle fiber during the negative (return to rest) stroke than the upstroke. Focus on the fundamental exercises that work complex muscle groups (bench press, dead lift, squat) rather than those exercises that only focus on isolated muscles (curl) for the greatest results.

Best to you.

Fat will no more turn to muscle if you work out than muscle will turn to fat if you quit. The two are completely different entities and will not inter-convert. What will happen is that your percentage muscle will increase (you'll build muscle) and your percentage fat will decrease (you'll convert your fat stores to carbohydrate which will be burnt for energy). 170lbs on 6ft actually sounds on the skinny side. I would always be more concerned with building muscle, which if you're successful, since muscle is more dense than fat, means you may actually gain weight. Since muscle is more metabolically active than fat, packing on muscle will help you burn fat and those two together will help you look more toned.

well fat won't turn into muscle, but if you lift weights, the muscle you gain will burn your fat, even when you sleep. in turn making you more defined....i would say since you are a man and your 170 at 6ft. tall....i would definitely start strength training and start building muscle...then any fat you do have will most likely disappear in time.

fat and muscle are two different things. but the more muscle you have the more calories it takes to keep the muscle therefore the more muscle you have can boost your metabolism.

if you want to tone lift lighter weights more times such as lifting sets of 15. eat lean meats such as ground turkey instead of ground beef, chicken, turkey bacon instead of pork bacon, fish. eat plenty of fruits drink plenty of water.

running also helps burn fat and tone a lil

When you stop working out, yes you will get fat instead of muscle.
