The best rawhides are these (American made ones are safest with no harmful chemicals): http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=687&N=2001+113518

Good chew toys for hard chewers are: Kongs, Jolly Balls (horse toy available at farm supply stores), Nylabones & Gumabones, and used lawn tractor tires (ask at a lawn mower repair shop). Be sure to get some good sized (not small enough to swallow) thicker rubber balls for games of fetch - this is most retriever breed's favorite game!

Rawhide can be swallowed and cause problems, but works for many people and their puppies. I generally avoid rawhide because of the chemicals that are used in processing it, and because dogs can swallow such big pieces. If rawhide seems like an acceptable choice, the rolled types seem to hold up better. If you get a larger one, puppy will knaw, rather than chew a piece off. Also, rawhide gnawing is best done under supervision and some can stain carpets so watch for that.

I would recommend not giving a puppy rawhides. They do not digest well and they can cause many problems... such as bowel obstructions, diarreah, or they can choke on them.

I recommend though, nylabone. They're avaliable almost anywhere. They have chewable ones that are digestable, and ones that are more sturdy and long lasting. They cost a little more than rawhides, but I believe pet health is worth the difference.

i have heard that rawhide is good to give an adult dog but not a puppy. it is extremely hard for puppies to digest them and you might ended up running into other problems because of them.
give the puppy chew toys, normal doggies toys.
my cockers as puppies love stuff animals i got them. for the female it was a bear (snuggle bear) and the male liked a stuffed dog. they must had them for about 1 to 2 yrs.
and about treats give them, one or two not much more. if you do they can get sick and throw up all over the house. not fun at all.

kong toys are almost indestructable. Also velvabones and compressed rawhides. These seem to take the longest for my large chewer to get through. Also make sure you watch him when he has rawhides so he doesn't try swollowing to much. The other thing is to monitor how much you give him so much he ends up w/ a bowel obstructions

Kongs! Also good are Busy Buddy toys, Orbees, Chilly Bones (wonderful during teething) and Nylabones. If your pup isn't a terribly assertive chewer, the Vermont Chewman is a strong stuffed fleece toy.

As long as he isn't eating enough to make him ill, rawhides should be fine. Be sure to get U.S.-made toys (imported ones are sprayed with pesticide) and make sure they are large enough that he won't choke on them.

I've had labs most of my life, and i find that it doesn't really make a difference what kind of chewy you get, as long as it lasts for more than a day or so. I usually got the basted ones that had some flavor, but i've also given them the regular unflavored ones; they didn't seem to mind or notice the difference. Puppies will generally chew on anything you give them! haha
Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend either. They're ok for when shes older and you can supervise her eating them, but for teething I would find some soft, chewy toys that she can sit and munch on. They'll massage he gums and help her mouth feel a little better. The puppy Kong toys would probably work.

Nylabone and Kong toys are pretty fantastic and indestructable. I give my pup rawhide occasionally... but he tends to not eat his meals when he has rawhide to gnaw/eat!

We grew up giving our dogs Pigs Ears... and they always loved those, too!

I wouldn't give raw hides to any dog, my parents dog got very very ill from salmonella poisoning from one a few years ago. And,most raw hides are made outside of the US and use a lot of harmful chemicals that can make your dog sick.

Like the others, I recommend a Kong, my dogs go NUTS for these!
