Backpacking is a term used to denote a form of low-cost international travel, differentiating it from other forms of tourism. The name comes from the backpacks that budget travelers generally carry in the interests of mobility and flexibility.

It sounds like someone is being derisive about your abilities, or lack thereof. In my younger days I did some back-packing. Backpack filled with: clothing, food, sleeping bag, and whatever else you may need. Then you start walking. Go where-ever when-ever. It wouldn't hurt to try. I suggest taking a camera, with digital make sure you have plenty of large memory chips. Writing pads. Keep track of every picture you take, things you see, things you do. There are many people who have become successful wildlife photographers and authors by starting this way. Unfortunately I went without the camera or writing pads. I still have a lot of good memories.

A Backpacker is someone who travels around the world with nothing other than what he keeps in his backpack. He takes hikes and may hug a tree or two.

Whoever told you this doesn't think much of your abilities or drive.

A backpacker is someone who enjoys the outdoors (hiking, camping, etc.) and carries their gear on their back (typically in a backpack) and this is characteristically done for leisure. I have never heard of a backpacker in the context of a job.
