To FOZIO, who answered above... How about the Catholics v Protestants in Northern Ireland?
Doesn't it seem strange that practically all the religions around the world today were all invented around 'The Holy Land', an area ravaged by wars even back then. And all major religions have popped up over the last few thousand years - although man has been on earth for hundreds of thousands of years! How come all these gods suddenly popped up to tell us all the true faiths? What was the sudden rush? And which god mentioned the dinosaurs?

No it's not worth it. But such is the nature of faith and religion that it blinds you to all else.
As humans we are remarkable when bound by a common goal. God has served us well in providing that common goal, wars have been won thanks to this myth, but now more than ever too many lives are being lost because of it.
The way it seems is that we will never have peace until each religion has wiped the other out. The Chatholics have been trying to do it ever since they were spewed out of Judaism (sorry for that imagery, but I think it suits.)
Even within Catholism there are huge devides, you've got you liberal christians, your right wing christians, your fundamentalists, evangelists, jehovah's witnesses...The list goes on and on and on.
What the hell do you expect in a world where we argue within our own religious sect?

I have to disagree, give me examples of mass deaths caused by relgion except for Iraq? Iraq is a special case, they are in a state of civil war caused by the invasion.
Apart from that I have to argue that most wars and deaths are due to the Israeli - Palestinian conflict, take a look at the number of wars - 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973 and the 2006 invasion of Lebanon, they are all about occupied Land not religion. If you take a close look at the middle east you will find a lot of countries that have non-muslim communities such as copts in Egypt, several christian sects in Lebanon etc and they have been living for thousands of years in relative peace. It all boils down to the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands, solve this problem and peace will finally take place

Of course its not worth it, but what about killing in the name of oil, or the almighty dollar? I'd prefer to fight for something a bit less commercial... It'd just make feel better to think, however wrongly, that I was killing in the name of my creator rather than a nation of overfed, under-educated, oil-hungry consumers. And so what if you can't prove that God exists, you can convince young guys that apple pie, pick-up trucks and McDonalds is a way of life worth dieing for, and then after they die McDonalds will finish off the invasion by opening a chain over there. Whats worse a West full of Mosques or an East full of McDonalds?

All through history anywhere in the world, wars have invariably begun out of religious beliefs.
Politics and religion are very closely linked, wrongly I believe.
As an atheist and hopefully a reasonably intelligent person, I struggle with the religious beliefs of some of the so-called fanatics.
Education is also a factor, and one's ability to question.
However if a fanatic believes that death is in fact a higher level, therefore is worth dying for, why is it that they are only keen to ensure that others the 'non-believers' go with them.
Surely it is in their interests to leave us to our 'hell' on earth?

Because there not happy unless they are having a war, what the hell else is there to do out there, if you go back far enough all these different religions all started from one. The two best money makers in the world, WAR & RELIGION.

No, it's not worth it.
And do you know what the difference between sunni and shiite muslims is? Those two groups that are killing each other daily in Iraq? A few minor little doctrinal differences in Islam -- like the difference between Southern Baptists and Methodists. And yet they kill each other over them. Just as Catholics killed Protestants, and are still doing (Northern Ireland).
What a mess humans have made in the name of imaginary gods. Sigh.

I think the fighting goes deeper than religion. People have been fighting in that region since there were people, and before the emergence of these religions. It's tribal warfare that has never stopped. Religion is just the current lines that are drawn between them.

The wars aren't about God. They're about politics and communal superiority. Jews and Muslims alike clump together and feel they're better than the alternatives; this is bound to lead to conflict, regardless of whether they believe in God or whether they believe in Communism/Capitalism or in Transubstantiation/Symbolism or whatever else you could care to base the divide on.

Its a lot deeper and more complicated than that. Its also about culture and ethnic background. A lot of very advanced science has come from this area of the world years before we in the West discovered them.
I think God would agree with you! What have we humans done to his world?
