My mother in law recently passed away and left her dogs with us. We already have 2 dogs and 4 kids. It's just more than I can handle.
I've put ads in the papers and called several animal rescue services (they all say that they are Full). The dogs are great! Monkey is male Chihuahua100%, he's about a year old.
Mary Jane is 50 % Chihuahua and 50% Daschund, about 18 months old. Both are great with kids and house trained.
Any ideas on how we can find them good homes would be appreciated. We are in the Atlanta Area if anyone is interested in either dog.

Alot of full bred dogs have rescue shelters that are set up to provide homes and rescues for a particular type of dog (many times they will take dogs with a breeds characteristics/looks). You may also want search Petfinder for leads on shelters. Since the dogs are not in the "puppy stage" (and came from a mature owner), there might be a a rescue which is designed to place these dogs in a home environment to which they were accustomed (after Katrina blew threw, we had several of these types in town -doing a great job) Even if the shelter were some driving distance, I am sure your ease of mind and their welfare would be first on your mind. Hope this helps somewhat.

Best of Luck

Oh, I wish I lived down there to adopt them- I really love animals. It's so sad since they just lost their owner- dogs are really sensitive to the loss of a loved one. Four kids and four dogs would be a handful but if they get along with your dogs, and they are small so they dont eat that much, maybe your children can get involved and help with their care? I always like the happy outcome but I can understand it would be challenging so my advise is to take a very cute picture of them in your children's laps (to show they are children friendly), make up flyers stating their unhappy situation, and post them at flea markets, grocery stores, library bulletin boards, etc, and if still no bites, advertise in the paper but dont use Free to good home because I live in the Northeast and they will pick up the animals and use them for research. Good luck.

Even if the Kennels are full, normally if you leave your contact information with them they will help you find them homes....Also, make some flyers and post them at some local stores if they will let you. Petfinder.com is a good place to list them as well. I would try not to take them to a kennel if possible, I know some are very nice but nothing beats a home for dogs...so if you can try and keep them until you get them new homes.....

Post them on Petfinder.org. A local shelter will normally work with you to help get them good homes. They will put you in as a foster home, you will care for the dogs and they will help by calling you if anyone is interested in the dogs. Or you can post them on Petfinder by yourself. The most important part is knowing that they go to good homes. Good luck!
