So, this age old question is being asked here finally! Well, I may not know for sure, but I have a sure fire way they could find out, and finally settle this proverbial mystery. Find a tree that is about ready to fall, and leave a tape recorder, with a long playing tape, nearby it, with it turned on. Come back in about three hours, and you will have your answer!

If nobody is around then how would you know that it fell. Maybe a very large group of beavers gnawed around the base and then ever so gently laid it down on the ground.

yes. I think it's very arrogant of the human race to think that sound exists purely for the benefit of our ears. sounds would exist without us to hear them. that's like someone thinking the sun doesn't shine until they wake up.
