It is a healthy fear, maybe reverence would be another word to use. Consider this Heb. 10 :31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the Living God.(Is speaking of God's judgment, we have not fear, as we trust in Jesus)
For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

Because fear is one of the most powerful motivators that people have at their disposal. Somewhere along the line, the love and understanding that God resembles got lost, and in order to keep people in check, some religious sects adopted the whole "fire and brimstone" take. "You're going to be a good little Christian or you will burn in hell for all eternity". When I was little the idea used to scare the **** out of me- I never got in trouble. Now that I'm old enough to know better I see all that tripe for what it is. Rubbish!

I think part of the biblical tradition that 'fearing God' comes out of has a lot to do with feeling awe and respect for the power of God, and in not taking God's love for granted. I definately agree that God's promise of loving kindness is not particularly scary.

Have you read the old testament? Do you see what God does to people when they disobey Him? You obey what you fear. That may sound horrible, but its still true. The new testament quotes Jesus saying,"How do you say you love me if you don't obey me?" Either way, fearing God and loving Him winds up making you do the same thing. So the bottom line is do you obey Him? I hope you respond to this.

All through the Bible we read that "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom." Until we recognize and trust the superior wisdom of God we have not begun to fear God. This fear is not abject terror of God, it is respect and honor for Him. If you try to live your life without recognizing God, ultimately you will find yourself (as the Searcher found himself) empty, dissatisfied, and restless, feeling that life is miserable and meaningless. The secret of life is the presence of God Himself.

You're right on!! Either God is a God of love... and loves us all, regardless of religion affiliation.. or even if you're an athiest... or we're all out of luck!! I can't believe that God is a God of vengeance as written in the old testament. Jesus taught only love... love for all mankind. GOD IS LOVE!!!

BOO-YAH! Totally agree. I have total and absolute trust. The outcome can't be in doubt, or else you doubt God.
God is Love. All the rest is just human construction in an attempt to define a concept so sublime as to be undefinable. Thus we introduced fear where fear is unnecessary.
Trust in Love and all will be well!

Psalm 2:10-12
Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling.
Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way,
for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

The fear that you are referring to in that context yes, but it is not so much that type of fear but the type of fear that refers to in the context of awe and amazement of the awesome power, a power so beyond our comprehension that we fear it because it is beyond our ability to understand it.
And you know the saying, "You fear that which you cannot understand".
