This could be true BUT............there is a big BUT. Such surveys are seldom correct. Just at random a few hundreds of persons are asked about a particular question. They could answer right or wrong or whatsoever. But we should not forget that such bunch of persons do not represent a group or a school or religion or a country. Britain has a big population of Immigrants who might not be aware of where the UK exists on the map. Yes, this question could have some importance if it was asked to the Geography students.

Second, average is never correct. For example, if we are to find the average height of males in Britain. What is the formula? Similarly we talk about per capita income of a particular country. All such statistics are wrong. We divide the GDP with the population and the number comes as the answer. Such statistics do no good to the society, to the government departments. These are simply to cheat the common man and present in the parliament only.

We can understand this fact also from this example. Britain is the member of elite G8 club i.e. the Group of 8, the most rich countries on this globe. But where is the richness in the UK? Everyday thousands of companies go bust, jobs are lost, millions are under debt, beggers are now on the roads, Healthcare system is in the shambles, England and Wales are now the most criminal states in the world, Elders are afraid of teenagers, everyweek one police man or woman is killed by the thugs, millions are unable to pay their mortgages, even there is a shortage of flu vaccine, only one in 10 students goes for higher studies and the list is endless. Still it is considered as one of the richest countries in the world. It is only on the paper.

Similarly saying that one in five British children cannot find the UK on a world map might not be true and it could be true as well.

I can believe it to be true. Especially if you include ALL children of school age, which is basically 5 - 19 years of age. Say that is 15 years span. one fifth of that is 3 years so we could say that everyone aged 5,6 and 7 cannot find the UK on a map of the world. In reality, I would say that some of the young kids can and some of the older children can't.

Also, think about the Americans, who believe that the USA makes up most of the world. Think World Series Baseball, World Wrestling Federation etc. etc. etc.

Well it's believable after spending a bit of time here.
If the quality of Geography teaching matches that of English then it's a wonder ANYBODY can point out the UK, even on a map of the UK.

It depends on the age of a school child. I'm 14, I attend a British school and I know where the UK is.

I wouldn't be at all surprised. Kids spend so much time gawking at the TV and playstations that it's only to be expected they're fat AND stupid. I don't blame the educational system, it's their parents who should get their act together.

If it is true, it's a disgrace - for themselves, for their parents and for the educational system which has neglected two, perhaps three generations in this country. Thanks Maggie, you old b i t c h, for starting the rot and taking our milk off us!
