If I mount a plasma or LCD tv on the wall above my fireplace, will the heat from the fireplace hurt the unit or screen?

Not the best place for it. However, you can measure usual heat that rises from a fire before you do it; then check manufacturer's guidelines because they will list operating temp guidelines. If you exceed them, you will void your warranty. Many fireplaces actually don't throw that much heat up into the room; it goes up the chimney unless you have one of those vent blowers that runs air out.

Regardless of the heat factor, above the fireplace is not a particularly comfortable height for a TV set (just imagine yourself sitting in your couch and straining your neck to look up there). Ideally, it should be set so that your eye level is about one-third of the way up the screen, so, for a 50-inch HDTV, something between two and three feet from the floor, definitely not more than four, would probably be best.

Not a good place. Not just because of the heat. Try sitting there on your sofa looking up at that spot for 3 hours. Where 'ya going to put those home theater speakers? Where do all the wires get put?

The "over the fireplace" look has been perpetrated on people by HGTV designers who don't know crap about home entertainment. And endorsed by wives/girlfriends who want to think they are on the cutting edge of home design.

Don't do it. It's dumb.
