...following a question I posted here:
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=ApZmOUFP6a9i2Fe0_IIHEU7sy6IX?qid=20061019235215AAVMJ2g

people said I quoted out of context and Muslims are only supposed to oppose Christians and Jews who mock them. (actually, the text is quite ambiguous, imho)

but someone quoted this from the Quran:

[5:57] O you who believe, do not befriend those among the recipients of previous scripture who mock and ridicule your religion, nor shall you befriend the disbelievers. You shall reverence GOD, if you are really believers

...which reads to me that Muslims are not allowed to befriend atheists! Worrying, since I'm an atheist and I have a Muslim coworker who probably thinks I'm Christian!

I mean, I can see that Muslims and atheists can be friends, but I was wondering about Muslims' attitudes towards this quote in that respect.

muslims, if they follow the koran don't have non-muslim friends period. To them you are an infidel and worthy of death if you don't convert to islam.

that's bad translation. the word Awliaa in Arabic doesn't mean friends, it means protectors or sponsors.

and YES Muslims can have Atheist friends. as long as we treat each others with respect. i will never befriend any one who doesn't respect who i am. my religion is a PART of me. so those who mock and ridicule my religion ARE NOT my friends.

Most I think would not mind, but it depends on how strict or extreme they are. I have a fairly strict friend who is Muslim who has an atheist friend. They get along fine.

I have several Muslim friends, and have never had any problems with our friendship interfering with their religion. Likewise, I have many Christian friends, although a strict reading of Deuteronomy would require them to kill me.

I'm Muslim, and most of my friends and co-workers are atheists. That's fine, it's called freedom of belief and free will. They won't bite me and certainly I won't too. Only manners and upbringing that count, not religion.

friendship should be based upon other things rather than " just religious beliefs " as I don't care how one prays anymore than their sexual preference or political party affiliation. I like a person because of who they are not their personal beliefs.
