This has always been a mystery to me. Obviously, Judaism/Christianity are monotheistic - believing strictly in one God. What is this referance in the plural voice all about? Who were these "sons of God?"

I'm not sure what scripture or translation you are referring to but I can only recall the bible stating the GOD created man.

Genesis 2:7
Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.

In different areas of the bible you will be confused if you don't understand God. Although there is only one God, there are three parts to Him. He is the FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST. Let me attempt to explain a little better for you. You see, God is kind of like the SUN. Because the sun is present, you can see the LIGHT coming from it. The light represents Jesus. You can see Jesus in people and situations everyday. The HEAT coming from the sun is like the Holy Ghost. You can feel the heat from the sun just as you can feel the Holy Ghost that comes from God. You see, although the sun, light, and heat are different, you can't have the light or the heat from the sun without the sun itself. The same applies with God. Although God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are different, there could be no Jesus or Holy Spirit without God.

All people are children of God, but being a disciple of God, knowing your position in His plan, and standing in your position is what makes you a son of God.

SkyWalker, We are all created in God's snapshot ... ethical, intellectual, and non secular snapshot. Adam and Eve have been created within the dispensational financial system of innocence so no I do not suppose Adam obtained the Godhead inside him like we obtain the Holy Spirit at present. The beneath Scripture is a connection with being asexual no longer the identical likeness of angels. Matt. 22:30 For within the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, however are like angels of God in heaven. No, Adam was once on no account just like the angels ... he was once human no longer angelic.

For starters, the verse in the Bible that talks about the creation of man does not refer to any "sons of G-d". Later on, it refers to "sons of G-d" who went and married the daughters of man.
The hebrew word there is Elohim, which in addition to referring to G-d, can also refer to judges, angels, or VIP (very important people)s. (Case in point: Moses is refered to by G-d as an Elohim over Pharoah.) In that conext, it is generally understood that it refers to the sons of noblemen marrying commons, or perhaps sons of people close to G-d.

Now, onto the beginning of Genesis...

Even though it refers to a plural (i.e. let US make man) all of the verbs are in the singular in Hebrew (verbs in Hebrew can take a singular or plural form). Also the actual creating of man was done in the singular.
Thus, it is understood that G-d was talking to others who were not Him, namely angels.

At the time that God created the universe and then our first parents, he was not alone. Angels had already been created and they are called "sons of God". The first invisible spirit being that God created was his Son, Jesus. When God said "Let us make man in our image", He was speaking to that very special Son of God, his only begotten Son--
" (Jesus) who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him were all things created, in the heavens and upon the earth, things visible and things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things have been created through him, and unto him; and he is before all things, and in him all things consist." (Colossians 1:15-17)
