I have one of those water bowls that holds a large amount of water and dispenses it as the cat drinks. You know, you fill the big resevoir, then turn it over on the base and it always keeps their water full? Well she plays with it!! she thinks it's so fun that she can turn it and make the water spill everywhere. I have squirted her with water when she starts to play with it, I'm swatted her REPEATEDLY when she plays with it, I've rubbed her nose in the water and spanked her...nothing is working. She is making a mess and I'm afriad my carpet is going to mildew from being wet so much and I'm sick of always cleaning it up. HELP!!

I can't move it to a different place because the only places in my apartment with tile are the kitchen (don't want her in there) and the bathroom where her litter box is (and I don't want her food next to that). There is a plastic placemat under her food, but she spills so much water it goes UNDER the placemat.

Try setting some thing heavy on it so she can't turn it over. I have one of those and the top is big enough for a couple of bricks or something so if yours is try that and see if it stops. Other then that you have two other choices. Only fill the bottom part with water so there isn't as much to spill if she does knock it over still or use a heavy dish she can't knock over. You will have to make sure and fill them up more often if you stop using the other kind.
Good luck.

It's a little odd I know, but some cats just like water. I have a cat who LOVES to jump in the shower with me. He showers off and then jumps out and licks himself dry. Try putting the water and food dishes on lineoleum where you won't have the mildew problem. If she is a kitten she will probably grow out of it. If she is an adult, you may have to get a water dish that is shallow and wide so she can't spill it.

Good luck!

The first thing to do is put a towel under the water bowl. The next thing is when he starts playing in the water pick it up,dont let him make a mess your in charge! Then buy a high water bowl one that is off the ground. They have some in stores its when there is a water and food bowl inside a little tray!If not then just wait till he grows out of the kitty stage!Good luck!

haha! I JUST posted a question about this! We are having the SAME problem! In the past we have put a large rock on top of it, or a weight. THat seemed to help. But my question is, why do they do it and why do they prefer drinking out of water glasses left around the house? I hope I am not torturing her by making her drink this water!!

Many cats like to play with water. You can't break them of it, and swatting them for it is like spanking a toddler for picking up and handling things—it's just in their nature. It would be better to just get a heavy ceramic bowl and put the fountain away.

Put something under the water dish like a placemat.

She finds it fun to play with her water. Some cats are like that. It is just a personality trait of your kitty. I think you should find a way that she can still have fun and not annoy you. Some of our pets have quirks that we just have to live with!

I would just get her a small bowl..you will probably spend less time filling it than you are cleaning up water now....my cat plays in his...so that is what I did:) Hope it helps:)

Get a new dish. And you shouldn't be spanking your cat. They don't understand that type of reinforcement. Don't take your frustration out on a defenseless animal.

Get another dish. I use one of those big butter tubs and all three of my cats are fine with it. If that doesn't work get one of those dishes with the wide base.
