Root beer is a fermented beverage made from a combination of vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, sarsaparilla root, sassafras root bark (which is mildly carcinogenic), nutmeg, anise, and molasses among other ingredients. Many local brands of root beer exist, and homemade root beer is made from concentrate or (rarely) from actual roots. Like alcoholic beer, root beer has a thick and foamy head when poured.
Root beer is a predominantly North American beverage, constituting about 3% of the American soft drink market.

Root beer was originally made in the United States from the roots of the Sassafras tree and/or the sarsaparilla root. Root beer is a fermented beverage that might include vanilla, cherry tree bark, licorice root, nutmeg, anise, and molasses among other ingredients.
Today most root beer is made from an extract.
If you are curious you can go in the woods and dig up a root from the sassafras tree. You will notice the root smells just like root beer.

It could be made from sassafras tree roots or from ginger roots. The modern ones are just flavorings but originally they used real plant roots in it.

Mostly because of the ingredient called sarsaparilla root. (I think that's where Sarsi got its name too).

naz18hg and Christi@n both copied and pasted their answer from Wikipedia, so there is no clone involved...
Though both answers are correct...
If you are into home brewing, try making your own rootbeer. It's a neat experiment.
