Sunday Morning we turn our back for 2 seconds and he got into our desk drawer and put some household staples in his mouth, he immeadtly threw up one of them, but I could tell he was havin a hard time swallowing whatever was left. We took him to the Hospital and they did an x-ray and said "Yes there is ONE in there and he should pass it within 72 hrs" well, we got a copy of the x-ray and it looks lke more than one staple. It looks like it is 4-5 of them stuck together in a row, like how they come, I could see how they ER thought it to be just one, but it is too big to be just one, they are only the little household stapler staples and the one in the x-ray looks to long to be just one. To me that seems like more to pass and more that could damage is intestines...I called the doc, but no one has called back yet...should I take him back to the ER or wait for the doc to call, or just let it pass...HELP!!!

Oh dear the things little ones will swollow. The staples will likely pass without incident. Scratches in the intestines will heal and should not be too dramatic. It might be well to see that there is a lot of fibre added to his diet to help the process along. The alternative is to do a surgery to remove the tiny staples which would be more dangerous that letting nature take it's course. The body will also digest the staples somewhat to make them less sharp. Just watch for blood in the stool which will signal that it is time to see a doctor.

I think the doc is right and your child will pass the staples. When you think of it, 4 staples together is not a very big section, probably not even 1/2 in wide. Surely he would be able to pass them. Keep an eye on him though. Watch for signs of discomfort or pain, vomiting, tenderness in the abdomen etc. If a child can pass a penny (and I've heard of this a lot) this should pass too.

If you're worried that there's too many or it not passing take him to the ER!I had a big scare here a couple months ago!My 20 mths old at the time busted glass from our coffee table! She had a few little cuts on her hands.I was more scared she might have swallowed some even though there were no cuts in her mouth. When I called the dr. he told me anything the size of a nickle usually passes in a few days and not to worry! But I know how you must feel.Good Luck!God Bless!

ER NOW!!! This is your child, If he's in danger don't wait, but make sure to request a new Dr. Don't let them tell you your not allowed to do that. If the hospital thins they can tell you what to do, Don't be afraid to be a *****. One thing I've learned over the years being a mom, YOU are in charge of what happens to your child. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thank you for the cotton ball trick, it did work. My dog had eaten a piece of a plastic fork it was a pointed and sharp. I gave to my dog 4 cotton balls covered in peanut butter and 24 hours later she passed some smelly stools but not the fork piece, 36 hours later she passed normal stools with the piece of plastic wrapped in a cotton ball.

I'd go back to the ER just to get more reassurance for myself....maybe a different ER, though.
