If you have a long standing case of dry, flaky skin, you probably could benefit from using a very gentle daily exfoliant, then applying a non-comedogenic moisturizer.

May I suggest that you use Cetaphil facial cleanser for washing your face,St Ives Apricot Scrub and Eucerin or Cetaphil moisturizer. Use a loofah or washcloth to cleanse your face,go very gently.Wash with warm water, never too hot.

A very lovely softener is to be made from a teaspoon each of brown sugar and olive oil, massaged into your face and neck each night and rinsed off with warm water. The sugar is a natural exfoliant which will dissolve onto your skin and it tastes yummy when massaged onto your lips! (You might get to liking this one so much that you never buy a commercially made scrub again.)The olive oil will leave your skin gently moisturized. A week of this treatment will make even the nastiest case of chapped skin look fresher and more radiant. AND this scrub is non irritating if you happen to get a bit in your eyes accidentally, a major plus. It's edible,so no big deal if you happen to swallow a smidgen by mistake.

When applying a scrub, don't be too brisk. Just go very, very gently and don't scrub for more than a minute or two at a time. Remember,it's your skin you're scrubbing, not the the deck of a ship!

Keep it real :-)

If you are dry, you can be creating all kinds of problems by exfoliating, especially everyday. Once every 7-10 days is sufficient.
You skin needs a moisture barrier to hold in the oil. Without it, you are going to continue to be dry and open yourself up to pimples and bacteria by creating micro-tears from the scrub. The scrub (and most soap) strips the oil daily and it can take as long as 20 hours to get it back.
Heres what you do.... seriously.
1) Increase your water intake by 16 extra ounces a day... water, not juice, not soda, just water. If you don't like the taste, add a green tea bag for added flavor and anti-oxidant protection.
2) Pay attention to what you are ingesting. Sugar, soda and processed foods actually will suck water from our skin.
3) For a few days, wash your face with water only. If you can't stand to do that, find an organic cleanser without sodium laurleth sulfate (or any other spelling of the same chemical).
4) Find a GOOD skin care line (moisturizer) that works for you. As we age, it's really important to invest in our skin because it's really the foundation of how we feel about our looks. I love Jan Marini, it can be costly, but it is so worth it.
5) Never forget to wear your sunscreen when you go out. It will protect from sun damage (which is dehydrating) and free radical damage.
Good luck. It's frustrating, but seriously you can turn it around. I did and have for my clients as well.

If you have a bad case of dry/dead skin, then you need to use it more often than another person. So, I dont think that you are using too much, but once your skin starts to get better try using it less. I also have dry/dead skin on my nose and chin so I use scrub every other day in those areas as well as a lofah. You should also try using Dove Sensitive Skin facial lotion it will help.

Hi there, I use mine daily, once in the morning and once at night. I have the flaky skin where I look worse if I use makeup. I have found a new face wash, can't remember the name of it now as I'm at work, but it has those scrub things in it that are kind of hard but it seems to be working really well, and most of my flakes have gone away. I think it is by nivea or something like that. It is for sensitive skin. I just have a small area around my nose now that is flaky but that too, seems to be getting better...yay!

yes, it is bad. only the most gentle efoliators can be used daily. st. ives apricot scrub is bad stuff. i know it makes your skin feel great, but it's actually doing tremendous damage. it causes tiny rips in the skin and over time it will make your pores larger. avoid any exfoliators with crushed walnut shells or apricot seeds. baking soda mixed with water is actually a good and safe exfoliator. as for the dryness, you need a really good moisturizer that you should be using morning and evening. you can start at the drugstore level with cetaphyl, but you'll likely need to spend more and go to sephora or ulta. philosophy's hope in a jar is great as is atopalm. as far as i know, atopalm is only available at skinstore.com. dove is decent, but considering the problems your're having, I would ditch it and go with a higher-end cleanser that's designer for extremely dry/sensitive skin. it wouldn't be a bad idea to go into ulta or sephora and tell them your problem and ask which cleanser and moistureier they recommend.

Using the Apricot Scrub everyday might dry your face out too much and leave it wrinkled. You might want to try putting moisturizer on your face of the morning to wash it with and gently run the face cloth over the areas where there is dry dkin. That has worked for me.

I don't think it's bad to use a scrub everyday unless you have sensitive skin. Since you have very dry skin , are you using a good moisturizer? One with sunscreen and alpha-hydroxy would be good

It could be.

Keep in mind its different for different people. If your face is starting to feel dry. Try to do it every other day.

You may want to try a moisturizer, such as oil of olay night repair cream in the evening.

Use what suits your skin type and only exfoliate about every week or you will eventually take off the top protective layer
