The expression "larger than life" means that the thing - whether it be a person, or an idea - is more important than anything else, to the point of seeming almost unreal.

"His storytelling was so descriptive that it made all of his characters seem larger than life".

"Large as life" means someone or something is very meaningful. A similar saying is when one is referred to as having a "zest" for life. In other words our lives are all important, and in reference, one is as important (big) as life itself. Someone who has major accomplishments or great deeds.
