There are a lot of options and a good doctor would have you on a mix of methods already. Good practice is to ensure that the meds are combined with a range of other therapies for best results.

I am a the biggest woosy when it comes to pain. I mean big woosy. Well guess what, I did an all natural birth with a midwife, I had no drugs what so ever! I got in the tub for a little extra pain relief, it felt good but once the contractions were coming like really close together, I had to get out because I was getting to hot. What really helped me was a Doula, you can ask the midwife to have one there for you. I was at a birthing center and would have never asked for a pain relief, I just bared through it, and I'm so glad that I did, it was a great experience for my husband and I. I got lucky enough, that from the time my water broke until I had my baby girl, it was only a 5 hour labor. For you being at a hospital with a midwife, you will have the option of gettting pain meds, they don't look down upon you.

Accupuncture is a good option. Go to a foot doctor for periodical sole massages. That works wonders as all your nerve endings are in the soles of your feet. You'll see a marked improvement in a short time.

Unfortunately, I don't believe there isn't any alternatives... however, before modern times, the Egyptians used meditations. This requires deep concentrations that requires you to focus on the pain... envisioning the "pulsing nerve" and then slowly envisioning the upset nerve becoming still and the pain fading away....

The MIND is powerful.....

I knew somebody who was smashed up pretty badly in a parachuting accident. His back was similar to yours. He used what I can only describes as a "mind over matter" technique, but unfortunately, I don't know the details.

Meditation and Aroma therapy - they are not going to get rid of the pain, but they will help you to focus and deal with the pain while your body is healing.

Good luck, get well and take care of yourself. :-)
