I'm too poor to afford dumbbells, and getting them is difficult for me. However i've stuffed a few heavy books into a strong durable bag, and the total weight amounts to a little over 5kg. Is it possible for me to use them as dumbells? Thanks in advance. (:

yes, that will do.
The key is gonna be to do the same lifting motion each time for the results.....
( like just carrying it around is not gonna do it for building muscles)

the bag will rip when you lift it. A cheap way to make a dumbbel is by filling a plastic bottle with sand.

Possible yes, but less than optimal. Balance is a problem.

If you have no other option, just make sure that they don't shift while you are using them. You probably also ought to use some clothing on the outside so you don't get hurt by a corner.

use either 1 gallon water or milk jugs and either fill them with water or sand, the handle on them will feel more natural.
