he goes to the bathroom outside whenever we are home, but whenever we are gone, he has always went to the bathroom on the carpet in our dining room. (gross i know). but just the other day we ripped out all the carpet and we now have wood floors! what can we do to get him to go to the bathroom, say, in the kitchen in front of the back door where he normally goes outside or something? we DON'T hit him. and we can't put him in a crate no matter how big it is, because he always goes to the bathroom in there, and then sleeps in it and drags his bed, blankets, and toys into it. so we have to wash EVERYTHING including him.
help please!!!!!!
he's a chihuahua, by the way.....

he doesn't do it every time we leave him. but if we're gone for more than, say, 3 hours, then he goes because he can't hold it anymore.
he's fine when we leave him.
i just wanna kno how i can get him to go to the bathroom on a surface that's easier to clean up.....

He is doing this because you left him. Like a spoiled child.LOL. So treat him like a spoiled child, and punish him. You can do 2 things. 1.only leave 1 towel in his cage and cage him, when you leave him, and then fuss at him when he messes, dogs know when they are being corrected, and DO NOT USE THE DOGS NAME AND NO IN THE SAME SENTENCE, only use the name when praising him, and he will learn the difference and like the praise of hearing his name. 2. call a local dog trainer and ask them what they do to correct this. Most are true dog lovers and not into the business just for the money, and will give you suggestins over phone. Good Luck!! we used ammonia in balloons in trash cans for our dog to not get into trash, but the floor is a different issue, and ours does not do this. Good Luck!!

The problem with your crate is it's too big. The crate is not a place for him to play, it's to put him away so he cannot go potty or tear things up. It should be large enough for him to turn around. I however, do not like crating dogs, no matter the size. I dont know about such a small dog, but a dog that age should be able to hold it longer without having to go. Maybe someone has a better idea on how to correct this issue. I've heard the rubbing his nose in it doesnt work, that you have to catch them in the act, so I dont know. Our puppy wasnt allowed in the house when we werent there, he stayed outside in the yard with the other dog. Now that he learned to go outside, we can leave him inside and he still wont go inside.

You can probably train him to eliminate in a particular place the same way you housetrained him. Take him to the area (a litter box or pee pad is a good idea, but you can use newspaper or any other surface you prefer) when it is time for him to relieve himself instead of taking him outside. He will likely be confused at first, but eventually he's going to have to go. Praise him like crazy and give him a treat when he goes. If he already knows to eliminate on cue, it will make your job much easier!
If he is having difficulty catching on, place some of his stool or a paper towel with his pee on it on the surface.
Until he knows that this place is an option, keep him confined near the spot when he is alone. Get an x-pen so that he doesn't have too much room; he will be more likely to go in the right place that way.

block him in the kitchen. get some baby gates to keep him in there. when you leave him, do you leave water and food out? we live in a basement appartment, and our dogs food is out in the middle of the floor, but if we leave it out by mistake when we go to bed, she goes all over the place, if not, she's fine. so you might want to take off the floor. if its only a few hours, he'll be fine. you might want to try putting down some potty pads where you want him to go, they make some that smell like grass. or you can try a little box with cedar chips since he's small enough. and the thing about the crate, it shouldnt be big. it should be big enough that they can stand and turn around, that way they WONT go because they have to lay in it.
good luck!

Sound's like he is punishing you for going out and leaving him.
He knows you don't like him doing that, and you know he don't like you leaving him so basically he's saying you leave me and ill do that.
You could try leaving him for just a few moments and if he's good praise and pet him well and give him a treat and gradually leave him longer and everytime he's good treat and praise and pet.
If bad no treat no praise no petting just tell him he's a naughty boy
He should get the message.
1 of my dog used 2 chew thing's up when i left him and in the end i had 2 shut him in the passage.
I did the treat, praise and pet and it worked.
Now he has run of house when I'm out and he doesn't do a thing

Chihuahuas are very funny about being along. They r very moodly and they want to punish you by doing what u do not want them to do. The best way I think is to take him to the spot and show him and then tell him no. Do this the same every time it happens. I have one and he done things too when I would leave.I hope u good luck on this for they are the one breed that pretty well do what they want to when they r mad. But I did get my broke of this.

Try to time his feedings so that you know he has gone to the bathroom BEFORE you leave to go somewhere.
Or, just confine him to the kitchen when you leave. ?
I wonder if he is doing what he is doing because he is mad when you leave. You might want to consult with a professional on this one. It seems like you may have a Chihuahua with some issues.......
Good luck!

Sounds like he has separation anxiety, my dogs have that, they don't use the bathroom, they chew everything! Maybe you could block him in the kitchen so he cannot get into other areas of the house. Good luck to you, Sounds like you love your doggie like I love mine!!!
