i'm using windows XP(media center edition)
wen i click on notepad(icon) its freezes the whole comp for 10 seconds and then it opens.it is taking lot of time(a small thg like notepad shudnt take that much of time right?)

it depends on a couple of things. are you already running alot of programs when you try to open it. how much RAM is in your pc? if you have less than 512mb nothing will be fast. even with 512 if you are running other programs it might be slower than it should.
you could have spyware on your pc slowing things down. do you have the right protection on your pc? you can try some of the basics to speed things up a little. do disk defragmentation and a chckdsk. good luck

I think you RAM might be running low. Do you have a lot of programs installed. I mean, if you have just Norton, that itself utilises 3/4ths of the ram.

Try wordpad, it has more uses than notepad.
