I'm lost in a forest which is inhabited by Red men and Green men. The Red men always tell the truth; the Green men always lie. I come to a fork in the road; and I have to get to a town called 'Umgowa', but I don't know whether to take the right of left road. There's this man standing at the fork, but it is too dark to see if he's Red or Green. I can ask 'one' question of this man, which calls for a 'yes' or 'no' answer, to find the correct road to take. What question should I ask?

#2 That would find the colour of the man, but would not tell me the road to take.

#3 Only one question I get.

Remember it's a YES or NO reply I will expect

"Will your answer be yes if i ask that the road towards right will goto Umgowa?" is the qstn to be asked.

Consider the following 2 cases.
1.Person at fort is truthteller
i) If road towards right goes to Umgowa...answer he says is Yes
ii) If road towards left goes to Umgowa...answer he says is No.

2.Person at fort is Liar

i)If road towards right goes to Umgowa....answer he says is "Yes"
(B'coz if you had asked him will road towards right goes to Umgowa his answer would be No(a lie),and he has to negate "no" and hence says yes)

ii)If road towards left goes to Umgowa...his answer will be "No"

(Same logic as earlier, if you had asked will right goto Umgowa,he would say yes(a lie), and he has to negate this answer and will say No)

So in both the cases, irrespective of truthteller or liar, you get the same answer either Yes or No.

If you get Yes,then right goes to Umowa, and if you get a No,left goes to Umgowa

Regards,

the question would be:
would the man that is the other color tell me to take the road on the left to get to umgowa?
if he says yes then you take the road on the right. if he says no you take the road on the left. it would be the opposite of his answer.

To the people above...how would that help the situation? The person who had the second answer...if you asked that question, you would then know if the one in front of you is the truth teller or the liar, IF they dont answer "dont know", but where would that get you? You can't ask another question cause you can only ask ONE question.

"Would someone of the opposite color, tell me to take the right road to get to Umgowa?"
