It's actually "INRI," and it means in Latin "IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM," or in English "Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews."

Luke 23:38 and John 19:20 tells us that the inscription above Jesus' head was also in Greek and Hebrew.

Peace.

The Romans posted the condemned's crime on the cross. To clarify, King of the Jews was Christ's crime, it was not an honorific.

INRI - Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. - Pontius Pilate
Some wanted to change it to "he said he was king of the Jews". Pilate would not allow it - he was impressed by Jesus, and how he bore suffering.
