If it really bugs you go to Control Panel, Folder Options and under View click on Hide Extentions for known file types. It is very helpful to know the extentions to your files as then you know what the file is. jpg means pictures. pub means you used Publisher, dat means WordPerfect data base, etc.

The most probable cause is that you opened a file, picture of some sort and didn't see the little check box that indicated to open these types of files with a specific program which changed your file assosciation. To correct your problem right click on your .pub files, you may have to hold down your ctrl key, select the "open with" option and choose the program from the list that is supposed to be associated with your files.

You can hide the extensions by opening up "My Computer", then tools, folder options, click on the view tab, scroll down to "Hide extensions for known file types" and make sure it's ticked.

They were always there, just hidden by default. I can only assume that either yourself or a program you've recently installed changed this option.

Hope this helps.

Step away from your computer. Those are called file extensions.

You can hide them but if you remove them your pics will break!

To hide do this,

Left click on Start
Left click on Control Panel
Double left click on Folder Options
Left click on the View tab

Check the box in from of Hide extensions for know file types
by left clicking

And make a true effort to learn something about computers before you ask questions like this!!!

PUK says:

These are the correct file extensions for Picture and Publisher files, if you never had them before then I would say thet either you or somebody has unchecked the 'Hide extensions for known file types' option in Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View.

To disable this just check the boc (put a tick into it).

If you installed photo editing software or word processing software on your machine, it may have "taken over" as the default application for all picture or document files. The file extensions (.jpg and .pub) do not change the file content and will not harm them; they simply make it easier for the newly installed software program to open your documents or pictures for editing.

This can also happen if you change your internet service provider and install their software on your computer. Again, it won't change or harm the files; it just "tells" the computer how to handle them.

NOTHING WRONG here Angie. This display shows the file extension which Windows uses to identify which program to associate the file to. This is very informative in many cases. I think you should do nothing and leave the display like it is. Someday you will be back on Y!A asking how to display file extensions.

Good Luck

They are harmless, they inform the computer what programs the photos and documents need to open.
It may well be that they were hidden in the past and you have added some software that has made these changes (ie unhide extensions)
Don't remove them as your computer will become confused and refuse to open them.

these are the file extension types just like a Word document is a .doc. They are not harmful, just informative!
