Treat train and do very short stays to begin with. Give the down command, the give the stay command and at the same time put your open palm in front of her face, palm facing dog, fingers down. That is the hand signal for stay. After you've given the stay command at first just count slowly to 10, give the Free command and give the dog a small treat. If the dog tries to get up before you give the free command say"EH,EH" and put the dog back down. do not say stay again.....you've already given the command, and start over counting to ten. after your dog will stay for the count of ten, count to 20. keep increasing the time as your dog will stay for the count. after your dog stays well for 15-20 minutes put her in a down, stay and bounce a ball. as soon as she breaks her sat, say"EH, EH" and make her get back down.....again do not repeat stay...you've already said it. your dog can learn to stay while you run all around her, bounce a ball and lay treats several inches out of her reach. keep the sessions short and frequent and always give a small treat for a job well done. It does take persistance and patience on your part. remember any dog is only as good as it's trainer.

i trained my dog to do many things, sit, stay, give paw, give other paw, roll over, double high five, etc.

i treat trained my dog....and this take a long time and much patience...but the dog will never forget (mine didn't anyway). I got dog at 10 weeks from shelter started training about 3-4 months old and now she is 7 years old and will do tricks w/o the benefit of a treat; however, i think she should be compensated for doing the tricks with a treat as much as possible.

You 'sit' your dog, tell him firmly to 'stay' and touch the tip of his nose with the palm of your hand, (hold your hand flat and touch his nose with your palm) while telling him to stay, do this several times a day, if he goes to move forward, put him back to stay position and do it again and again until he gets the idea. This is how it's taught in obedience school.

This is a web site with a video on methods for training, this one is specifically to train to "stay". This is linked from the petfinders.com site and I found it very informative and helpful.

Consistency is really important as is patience... these things take work and time, but you will be very happy when you get to see the results.

If you have to ask this question you really have some learning to do. I would recommend enrolling in a basic obedience course. They aren't too expensinve b/c they are in group settings and they will give you some basic knowledge you desparately need

Say "stay" to him/her, and when he does stay, give him/her a treat.
