My husband didn't have a ring when he proposed, he said that he knew enough about women to know not to buy jewelry without their input. He and I agreed on the way to the jewelry store that anything more than $1,000 would be too much and that we weren't going to finance our rings. We got my engagement ring and wedding band (they're an interlocking set) for about $600, and his band for about $150.
The jewelry guy (who doesn't work on commission, I thought that was important) told us that a marquis cut gets you more surface area for the same weight, because the way the light refracts makes the rounds have to be very conical (a lot of what you're paying for ends up not being seen) and the marquis very flat. He brought out a half carat round and a half carat marquis for us to look at, and it's totally noticable. I'm glad that we said "what do you recommend" to the question of what kind of stone we wanted, rather than go in there with our own un-informed ideas.

You will get lots of different advise, some will say 1 months salary, others will say 3 months salary. Personally, I would kill my b/f for spending that amount on a ring. I think the guy should spend as much as he can comfortably afford, while not totally breaking the bank. I have been married twice and engaged for the 3rd time now, and I have had no ring at all any time. A ring is only a symbol of your engagement anyway, it is not the law that you have to have one at all.

It is dependent on what a person can afford. Normally when I give a woman a ring I look for a nice size. If, it a Diamond, to me a large Diamond (One Carat or more) is too big. Shop around and look for a nice clear Diamond around .65 Carat. This a little smaller than one and bigger than a Half Carat, a very nice Diamond. You may want to explain to the Jeweler what you wanting and he/she show you the "loose diamonds" they not mounted. Look at different shapes, Heart Shaped are real pretty, but, hard to mount AND hard to find one that shaped good, so, think Pear Shaped, it look similar to a heart and mounts more stable. The Traditional Round always looks good. A round .65 Diamond loose can range about $500-1,000 USD depending on Quality, Clarity, Color etc. Have the Jeweler explain these terms so you understand what you buying. A well shaped Heart .65 loose runs about $800-1,500 USD. My Jeweler is a small place that not a Department Store type Jeweler. He has one shop. When he knows what I want he puts out the word and Jewelers tell him what they have until he finds what he knows I want. Normally, if, I just want a Regular Ring for the Diamond it Free. I just pay for the Stone.

no one in the US spends 2 months salary on a ring unless their a sucker or a moron..just get ur girl what she can afford and if she aint happy with it than it aint worth it..
this 2 month salary thing is completely retarded, like if i make 5k a month iam supposed to drop 10k on a ring? as if all the money i make goes towards buying useless crap and not bills, housing, food, gas, drugs, alcohol, gambling, and hookers....seriously theres better things to spend ur money on
