Most foreign workers require a work permit to work in Canada. Here is the official page that explains the details :-

As an american, you have some exceptions to the standard rules based on NAFTA. (North American Free Trade Agreement). All you need is a written job offer fromt he employer, fill out this form :-

As Wilhemina said, it's not as easy as the other answerers make it sound, but it is possible.

You will have to get a work visa, and to do so, you wil need to have an established job offer, with documentation from the employer, which will include why the job could not be filled locally, etc.

There are various classes of visa's to apply for, and the links above will take you to the websites to get the info. Also, there are fee's .... will cost you $700-1,000 depending on various circumstances.

Canada is great! And it is more different t han the US than people in the US realize.

Immigration between Canada and US is not as easy as you think it should be. I am married to an American and going through hell with it. You will need a Visa to work here. Certain professions can get them easier. Other answerers have already given you links to try.

You could get a job in Canada so you would be eligble for a work visa and I think after a year your able to apply for a Canadian citizenship.

I don't think you need any special documents. I think you can travel back and forth freely.
