Can anyone "enlighten" me as to why an American, living in America, would want to adopt a babies from abroad instead of an American baby? Its like people dont even see that there are orphans in America and that the "system" here isnt so great either. America seems to have its priorities screwed up, "help other orphans from other countries, who cares about ours?"...right? I personally think these celebs are doing a disservice. I understand that Africans arent doing terribly well, but this is where the list of priorities comes in.

If you are talking about Hollywood is the "in thing" to do now. It will be phased out pretty soon, like everything else they do. Problem I have, is why go adopt a black baby way in Africa, where there are many unwanted black babies in America and it would probably be a whole lot cheaper to adopt them here than there. These Hollywood people do it only for publicity. I doubt they care much about the children they adopt. They will probably grow up to be a mental mess!

This is not new. People have been adopting from overseas for quite sometime now. In fact, I know more than a few middle class Americans that have gone to China and Cambodia to adopt, and here's why:

- The process in the US is WAY too cumbersome. You want to stop abortion? Then open up the adoption process.

- There is no guarantee that 1, 3, or 9 years after adoption that the Father who wasn't on the Birth Ceritificate, or the Mother who is no longer on crack won't come and try to take the baby away. It has happened, it is happening, and it will happen in the future.

- Allow gay couples to adopt. If you think it's best that a child be with a mother and father, then great, YOU go adopt and at the same time, outlaw sperm banks which allow for any single female with a bank account to have a child. If you aren't willing to adopt yourself, then STFU about willing, able, and loving gay couples who are BEGGING to raise the UNWANTED older children. NOTE how everyone here is talking about the infants. That's the only type of child breeders want to adopt.

Clear up these three things, and there will be a lot of kids taken out of state custody.

I don't think it has anything to do with caring more for foreign babies as it is that most adoptable kids in America are usually not newborns like most people want. And a lot of people do adopt other American children, but we are the most wealthy country and most economically balanced. A lot of the foreign countries are not. In a way I can see why foreign babies are adopted often. They are given better opportunities in America and have more freedom. Can you imagine having to abort your child because you lived in China and they only allowed 1 child per family and no girls? It's not fair to those babies who never get a chance and so many people here have so much love to offer to a child both foreign and domestic. I think people like you who criticize American people and celebrities who are just doing what they feel lead to do are just missing the point of having love to offer to any child no matter where they are from.

It's hard to get an infant in U.S.A. the wait is long, and your wait is longer if you want a particular race, or sex. If the adoption is open, you have to deal with the birth parents, who usually have a list of issues a mile long. My husband was adopted in the 70's here, as an infant, and his adoption was closed. We wish we could find his birthmother to thank for the gift of life, but his records are locked up, and we are not allowed to access them. The need is great here for older kids. Nobody wants to break old bad habbits, and it is sad, but true. I would love to adopt, even an older child, but I fear for my three young daughters as well. If I adopted an eight year old boy, and he was violent, or witnessed/experienced sexual abuse, would he act it out on my girls? Studies show it's a good possibliltiy. I would love to get an infant, but if I am white, and adopt a black child am I giving them a disadvantage? Will they be made fun of, and lose their culture? Maybe so. Maybe not. Depends on the child, and the community surrounding you. I have close friends who are white, an adopted a black baby. They have 3 other children who are biological though....and therefore white. There is no foster care system, and often no or very poor orphanages on the other side of the world. Further educate yourself on the Russian & Thailand orphanages, and the adoptions that happen there. Girls are adopted into human trafficing. That is raised to be pimped out, for life. Even though I wish every child in the U.S. could have a family and a place to call home, they are far more priviledged than orphans in other countries. Unwanted baby girls are put to death in China. Africa has a high rate of parentless children due to the aids epidemic. My heart just aches thinking of the truely innocent children that suffer worldwide. Even though my parents would win no honor I can look at the big picture, and see I was and am now truely blessed...mostly because of the country I was born into, and the opportunities I am demanded to be given by my country. Food, shelter, clothing, education, freedom. We are so fortunate!

Have you ever adopted before? My family has and my friends have and American adoptions are alot more difficult to come by if you want a baby from when he/she are born. My friend had a baby taken away through the american adoption process three months after she got her. My sister just adopted a baby from another country and there is no way that baby can ever be taken away. It is all due to what you're comfortable with. A baby is a baby they are all in need. It is the children that are 4 and older that need homes, everyone seems to want a baby. The whole thing is disheartning if you really think of it. I have five children of my own and to think of them not having parents or even one parent, I cannot fathom it. I think people should adopt older children that are in need if you ask me.

I am Canadian and it is easier here to qualify for foreign adoption than domestic. This includes the States. I have a friend that was able to adopt a baby from the States. Her husband is blind and they are unable to qualify for a baby here, so adopted south of the border, but if they were unable to do that they would have looked overseas. My husband and I have 2 children and have talked about adopting as well. We are more sold on foreign adoption because it is easier and quicker. Since we are military and move a lot it is difficult to go through adoption processes that could take up to 5 years.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to adopt a healthy newborn in this country? People are on waiting lists for up to ten years. The criteria that you have to meet is ridiculous. It costs a great deal of money. Your personal life is no longer your own. Even if you somehow meet all their criteria for age etc. your odds of getting a newborn are virtually non-existant. Talk to anyone who has gone thru the nightmare of trying to adopt in this country.
THAT is why people check into foreign adoptions. If I wanted to adopt that is what I would do.

Man, if anyone is willing to adpot a misfortunate person no matter where they are or from it is a very good thing. Yeah the system over here ain't that great but people in other countries are far more worse. But, I do see your point and it is valid but I don't think anyone should be criticized for adopting anyone who needs someone.

Sorry, I am ALL American, but babies, and children are still baby's and children. I don't care where they come from. There should be no politics in a baby needing all the love from a two parent family. Anyone who adopts (I don't care where) is a hero to me period.

So basically you are saying we shouldn't care about anyone else but ourselves. Kids from Africa and other third world countries have it a little bit rougher then our orphans here. They starve (most of our orphans do not), they don't have any sense of family (at least ours are in a foster care program), and they are just not going to even have the possibility of being adopted by their own people.

I don't know about you but I would much rather help out a truly family-less and starving child then an ungrateful American child. Think of someone other then yourself for once. Sure, adoption in America is great and needed BUT so is adopting from other countries. It's all as important and the whole "adopt our own" thing isn't working too well for me.

Have you adopted a child from America? I'm in the process right now.
