Well I am taking my first plane trip ever in a couple days and am, of course, pretty anxious about it. Flying from New York to Colorado, first in a CRJ plane (aka a puddle jumper) and then in a big Airbus for the long haul. I am pretty nervous about it, despite all of the safety statistics I have read about flying. Any words of encouragement or good tips to make the ride smoother and less stressing for me?

Flying can be fun. Eat light, but eat, and take a Dramamine before your flight, to relax you.

Take off usually puts a bit of pressure on you, pushing you back in your seat, which can be a little frightening if you're not anticipating it. Just go back in your seat, like you do when you're climbing a hill on a rollercoaster ride, and don't resist the pressure you feel. It lasts only a few seconds, then the plane levels off.

Once you're in the air, remember to breathe deeply (people tend to breathe shallowly when tense, which makes the tension get stronger), stretch your muscles (especially shoulders, back and neck) and try to keep your body as relaxed as possible.

If you have sensitive sinuses, the pressure can make you ears pop or close up, so you might want to take along earplugs just in case. Flying with a cold, by the way, can be miserable.

Marvel at the views outside your window. You're in for an adventure, so enjoy it all you can!

Best of luck to ya!

Both the CRJ and Airbus are very very safe.
When you are booking your next flight, try to get on a Airbus (they are newer).Thousands of people fly every day, and 99.9999% percent of the time they make it safely to their destination.
Just relax, chew gum, listen to music, or talk to fellow passengers.
Don't use your cell phone on the plane- it will freak you out.
Best Luck!

First, please ignore mboyan86's attempt to make you even more nervous.
Second, think of it as just getting on a bus to go somewhere - it's really no different and, as you already know, you're actually safer in a plane than on a bus.
Thirdly, think of it as an adventure! It's always been man's dream to fly, and now you'll be doing it! Landings and take-offs can feel pretty exhilarating, like an amusement park ride.
If you can "program" yourself to think differently about the experience than you do now, i e thinking of it as an adventure or as just getting on a bus, you'll also affect the actual experience in a positive way.

Relax, and don't forget to enjoy the sights. Drink some chamomile tea before you head out to help you stay calm and take some ginger in case you feel queasy. Take magazines or a book with you, as well as some small snacks. Books/magazines will help to keep you busier than a cd player - take both just in case.

Good luck and don't worry.

If you're really anxious, just sleep throughout the flight. Or take some sleeping pills before you get onboard, that way the medicine will have some time for it to take effect.

Just enjoy yourself! And, this is entirely optional, talk to the person next to you or one of the flight attendants. Have a good trip!

dont be worried about flying,
just be worried when the plane stops flying, at 35,000 feet and you begin you slow painfull journey to the ground, plumiting at atleast 700mph. possible in flames

but on the bright side there is 1 in 567,000,000, chance you will survive a air crash
