IHave very poccessed hair (a lifetime of relaxing and currently started dying it) but I want to lock now. I know that I may need to cut my hair down to my new growth, but what other steps should I be taking?

Ignore those other people who are obviously not of your race.

Cut off all old growth. Do not apply any processing hair products. Do not comb or brush your hair for a while (like never in 3 or 4 months). Finger comb it to stay in place and frame your face.

Have it twisted in 3 to 4 months when the hair is long enough to twist. Your beautician will recommend hair products you can use to keep the hair locked and she will advice you on daily treatments and washing your scalp.

I love dreads they look good on everyone who does it.

You can obviously tell when ignorant people, who know nothing about the topic, try to speak intelligently. Anyway, you will have to cut off all of the processed hair. It will break off and cause split ends if you don't. I would find a natural stylist. You could go to a regular one, but I don't think that they will be as experienced. I found the first link for you, and I hope that it helps. The second link is where I order all of my products. You can try Sally's, but you will probably end up like me (out of money and disappointed).
Look at some local African stores and beauty supply stores for the products on the site, and ask if they can order them. The second link also has a lot of information about the transition, which I did not know. Wash at least once a week. Moisturize every day. 100% shea butter is the best that I have found. Best wishes to you on your endeavor. You will love your hair, and not spending four hours in a stylists chair. Take care.

when you cut it all off and let it grow from the root once it has grown at least an inch or two then part you hair by the size of the lock that you want it to b then twist it not like you are twisting pony tails though but like you are twisting the tie from a bread bag then just keep twisting until you have twist it to the tip very tight you might wont to use some beeswax to help it stick and look shine after about a month twist it some more so that the scalp can show every month you will have to twist it until it stays and it will lock now to get red of the locks you will ave to cut your hair off again and let it grow back like you want
hope this helps good luck
