Hi:

I'm looking for a Santa Fe 2002, 2003, 2004, and found that the 4x4 option is ALL THE TIME All wheel drive without an option of turning it off. Are there any Santa Fe models where its optional. Where you can turn on 4x4 option and also use front wheel drive option on dry conditions? Frustrating.. (I've been researching this car for weeks now, and still new issues arise everyday.. lol) Thanks!

Hey Jenna, No unfortunatly the sante fe does not have the option of turning its all wheel drive on and off, But lets evaluate the difference between 4X4 and all wheel drive... There is a difference, If you were to jack up a 4X4 so that all the tires are off the ground and egauge the 4 wheel drive you will note that only one front tire and one rear tire will be turning, if you walk up to the car and grab the turning tire it will stop and the other tire will start turning. that is due to 4 wheel drives are actually only 2 wheel drive ( 2 wheel drives are actually 1 wheel drive ) because the engine is only controlling two of the tires through a limited slip defferential, distributing power to the tire with the less traction ( resistance) If you did the same thing to a all wheel drive vehicle you would notice that all 4 tires are turning while its in the air if you walk up and grab one you will get hurt.. thats because all the tires are in-dependant, and there is no transfer of power, Thus giving you better traction and manuvering ability than a 4x2 or a 4x4 ( Buy the way front wheel drive is better used on ice, snow and mountain areas while rear wheel better on dry roads ) In my professional oppinion all vehicles should be all wheel drive, Also most of your newer 4x4's are not even controlled by the driver they come with an ATC module which stands for automatic traction control meaning the car senses what tires need to be engauged and does this automaticaly for you, well i hope this helped you out some... on a 4x 2 its actually one wheel drive because the engine only controls one tire that why when your stuck only one tire spins.

Hi What has happened is that your check engine light has come on. This can mean a variety of things, but the safest thing for you to do is to call your mechanic and ask what they suggest. Be prepared for them to ask you about the car (ie. is it making any noises, are you noticing any puddles on the ground under your vehicle? etc). They will tell you either to bring it in at your next service or for your piece of mind to bring it is sooner. They also may have an idea of what the problem is as well. If you are worried about after you called them - bring it in to them - they are professionals and will be able to determine the problem. It could be simple - resetting the light, adding fluid or something a little trickier. I am sorry I can't help more, but I used to work for Ford, and don't know a lot about Hyundais. Good luck! P.S. you might want to call Hyundai and ask for an owner's manual.

AWD is great but do you really need it? FWD with good tires will do the job too. Gas mileage is better with a 2 wheel drive. Santa Fe's are pigs on gas my sister had one. If you want an SUV thats safe reliable good on gas with AWD, try a Subaru forester. Or you can get your Santa Fe and disconnect the AWD relay to make it 2 wheel drive but that will eventually ruin the AWD system.

I suggest you purchase a bus pass and plan on taking the bus. Mass transit is the way everyone needs to be thinking and this is your chance to set a great example. Happy Trails!
