Why is it that the closer I get to getting home, the more intense the need to go to the bathroom? It's like my bladder gets all excited on the way home to the point where I'm fumbling with the key trying to get into the house. Why is that? 5 minutes before, I barely had to go, and I'm sure it's only because I just reached home. If I was stuck in traffic or stopped off somewhere before going home, I don't have the same need to go, but whenever I come home it's like my bladder knows it.
I've mentioned this to a few people and they all said that it often happens to them too. Anyone else? And does anyone know why? (I don't).

An enlarged prostate gland can lead to a sense of urgency in wishing to visit the bathroom. And it can cause frequent urination. I know for a fact that the experience you report is shared by a number of others, usually older people. The prevailing temperature can influence the bladder: generally, colder weather seems to increase urination, perhaps because the body and the heart have to work harder and produce more urine as a consequence. Also whether you are sitting down in a warm car or walking in the cold seems to make a difference. While waiting in a Park-and-Ride lot for someone to pick me up, I have experienced great urgency but as soon as I got into the car and sat down the urgency disappeared for a good 30 minutes. Perhaps this explains why when you are near your apartment the urgency increases. And there is what might be called the Pavlov effect. The mind knows that one can now finally empty the bladder without embarrassment.

I think the feeling of anticipation can actually cause this to a certain degree. When you think about urinating (which can also include if you hear running water, etc., or even if you're in a traffic jam and just start thinking about how long it will be before you're able to go!) your brain unconsciously triggers the reflex that starts your bladder muscles contracting as though you're actually going to urinate, which increases the intensity of the urge to go. As long as you're still able to keep your urethal sphincter shut to resist the increase in pressure, you'll continue to hold it until you get to the bathroom, and unless you actually spring leaks while on your way into the house, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Annoying, though!

It's because your mind is telling it that you're getting closer to a place that you can go. The mind is a powerful thing.

Simple....
cause your mind knows that your almost home....

When your 5 mins away you know your 5 mins away...when you at the door with the keys...your "getting ready" to go, so your body knows its allowed to go....
