Negative. Releasing the truth would hinder the governments agenda and negate political popularity which would ultimately take a toll on our morale. The numbers are no doubt real but the causes, circumstances, and details are skewed to benefit the government and make sacrifices more tolerable and less sad and/or negative.
It's kind of like me tellling you to give me 30 dollars and I'll go double your money at the casino. I get there, blow your 30 in less than 5 minutes on one slot machine... am I going to tell you that??? No... or you probably won't ever give me more money and will be angry with me... I'm going to dress it up, "I took your 30 and played a dollar slot, i got up to 100, then i went to the roulette table and was up to 140, I always win at poker so i played and got beat with a full house....twice.... sorry... next time I'll be happy with the 140...."

They don't need to, the media is right there telling the world and the insurgency, everything that's going on. Hell, with those people in country, the insurgents doesn't need a spy network, all they need do is turn on CNN.

One has to wonder, what GWB and Rumsfeld were thinking when they imbedded the media right in with the troops. Like father, like son!

Of course it doesnt. The US Government gives the glossy picture of the war. Not the coffins being brought back in. Not the guy with an eye missing. Not the person who is in a wheelchair for life.

Damn people here accusing us of all being liberals. How about you gung-ho's who dont truly understand the consequences and price we pay for war. Its nice sitting behind a desk isnt it. You condemn my opinion but you dont actually seem to be at the frontline of a war you believe in so much. I would rather go to prison than fight for a war that Bush created on his own.

The U.S. government doesn't have to. The hostile press is far too willing to make a splash every day by announcing more doom and gloom.

No, I do not, I have seen on the news that they do not attribute all violent deaths to the insurgency. I think in official terms car bomb deaths are not counted for some reason. Never trust the government as long as a repuglican is president.

Yes, they do. It is public information and records can be pulled through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). Believe me I have worked in a Defence organization for years and everything that is documented is available under FOIA.

Till now I used to think so but now after reading so many comments I am not too sure of your Dubyaman. But I still believe that we have plenty of reporters and news channels so its not very easy to hide these casualties.

We have enough liberal news representatives there, I would be surprised if it wasn't exagerated. Also the news will say several times that there were x people dead and carry it on to day when there were less

It already has. The press in Iraq makes sure that nothing is covered up.

Is the moon made of green cheese?
They will not allow pictures of coffins of killed soldiers,
you see no pictures of the wounded. These marginalized men will have a problem.
We have a problem. The PR of trying to make this war
"nice" for TV is misleading people about what it is:
a human meatgrinder of high tech weaponry, with plenty of "collateral damage" - innocent people killed.
We will be hated for 10,000 years for this!
What do you say to comfort an orphaned child?
How do you explain "freedom" to them, when they are afraid to leave their eyes open, and with them closed, it is worse?
Maybe Rumsfeld knows. He knows everything else.
