Prejudice, discrimination and quite frankly a load of bulls#*t.
As you have said, it is perfectly OK for straight people who indulge in any form of promiscuous activity to give blood but not gay men. Logically their is no reason and there are lobbyist groups campaigning against this.
They claim (they being...the powers that be in the NHS), that there is a higher risk of HIV/aids or other stds to be gained from gay men. however in other studies also by them and the who (world health organisation) they claim that HIV and aids is on the increase particularly amongst young straight people, as the threat of HIV/aids has diminished from public view of recent times, the younger generation are under the impression that they aren't going to get it, cause its not common anymore. which we all know is ludicrous.
Although if anyone from the NHS is reading this they will probably change the rules again to stop gay men and under 25s from giving blood.
personally i do not give blood. I have nothing against it, but the last time i went to a blood drive with a gay friend of mine (i am straight by the way) he was turned away, so now on principle i do not give blood.
My Message to you....the next time a loved one or relative loses a limb or their life because they do not have enough blood for a transfusion etc... Give the doctor a slap, and tell them they would have plenty more, if they remove their head from their *** and see whats going on in the world around them.

The percentage of gay guys with HIV is much higher than straight guys. Since there is only a small percentage of gays in the population (5%?) it makes sense for the authorities to exclude gays from this process.

However if you are gay and you have always practiced safe sex, then I think you should give blood. Just tell them you are straight if they ask.

Becuase the risk of transmitting AIDS/HIV is increased, due to the possibility of blood transfer. Same reason why you can't donate blood for a year after having a transfusion.
