The basic idea has been around for hundreds of years and no one nation can ever claim to have been the first... however the American Civil war version seems to have been the first successfully used military self propelled submarine. The U Boats were very effective but diesel powered and horrendous to crew...the German success was as much to do with the dedication and passion of the crews and the logistical support for the wolf-packs. Their attempt to cut off the atlantic convoys from supplying the British Isles was more effective than all the doodlebugs and rockets ever were. Early submarines used diesel engines on the surface to recharge their batteries and then electric motors to power them underwater. Most modern subs are nuclear powered electric... meaning they don't have to surface for months on end and some completely circumnavigate the world without surfacing. The only reason they have to stop is to pick up more food.

Tony B remember the question was invented by British and although some were Scottish (and if you lived in Scotland you would want to invent a television), they did so using English tax payers money!

Hmmmmmm. Don't know about the submarine. I thought that was invented during the American Civil War but, as for the rest at the start of your list, they are all Scottish inventions - oh and there was a guy from Arbroath on board that Civil War sub.

Uhmm, let's add some realism to this statement.

Jet engines - Dr. Hans von Ohain and Sir Frank Whittle are both recognized as being the co-inventors of the jet engine. Each worked separately and knew nothing of the other's work. Hans von Ohain is considered the designer of the first operational turbojet engine. Frank Whittle was the first to register a patent for the turbojet engine in 1930. Hans von Ohain was granted a patent for his turbojet engine in 1936. However, Hans von Ohain's jet was the first to fly in 1939. Frank Whittle's jet first flew in in 1941.

SCUBA = Ask who invented the first self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, and you will probably hear the names of Cousteau or Hans Hass. Unless, that is, you go to St Brieuc, in Brittany, and speak to Daniel David, a keen diving historian, who has uncovered the patent documents for what is probably one of the first scuba sets invented - with all the ingredients which make up a modern day set of equipment at that! The rig, shown in drawings completed by Daniel from the written description and drawings in the patent records, was dived successfully in 1828. It seems incredible that the knowledge of it was completely forgotten for 150 years.

Modern Computer = Konrad Zuse (1910-1995) was a construction engineer for the Henschel Aircraft Company in Berlin, Germany at the beginning of WWII. Konrad Zuse earned the semiofficial title of "inventor of the modern computer"

Just another english person claiming to be British and therefore claiming something that belongs to another country (Scotland).

Same way as you're stealing their [North Sea] oil and gas.
