Your mother has over come 50 years on Earth and that is a major accomplishment in my eyes. I would make her a scrap book of pictures and other little things, that remind her of her 50 years alive. Just sitting and thinking of old memories with her will make her feel special. Make sure that the whole day revolves around her. Make her favorite dinner and cake. Just having you there will make it a special day.

Are you SURE that a party is out???? I would think that the people in her life would donate a few hours (even on christmas) to a family member or friend who is turning 50. I would plan it for evening, since most people have their Christmas get togethers in the morning and afternoon. I would send out Christmas cards to everyone that you are inviting (from you personally) and inside place an invitation to her SURPRISE birthday celebration. Acknowladge that you appreciate that this is Christmas Day, but your mothers 50th is a big one, and since it falls on Christmas every year, it tends to get overrun, and how much this means to you to give her this party. I would also state that this would be a NO GIFT party, but as every one to bring a dish to pass. Make arrangments with her closest friend or sister if she has one to bring the cake so it is truley a great surprise.

My friend's bf is making a slideshow on his computer of old photos of his mother for her 50th birthday. He is going to burn it onto a DVD and then give it to her at her birthday party. I thought that was kind of sweet. One of those "this is your life" type of things.
