the answer is that these people truly believe they have the cornerstone on truth. when a person believes they know the truth they can be completely closed minded to any other truth.as an example, 2 plus two is four ( a fact), if someone told you it was five wouldn't you be stubborn and fanatical in your belief that the other person was dead wrong and you were absolutely right.
and this closed mindedness would prevent you from seeing any other possibilities. so it is with the religious fanatic that believes
their system of truth is the only way. in fact all ways eventually will lead to the ultimate truth..

I don't think most deeply "religious" Christians are fanatics. (I can speak for Christians because I am one). If you are not interacting with Chirstians on a daily basis then you probably can only base your opinion about them on the media or on pickets or something. Knowing someone on a personal level and knowing them vicariously through the media or some non-personal way is completely different.

Most Christians exposed on the media make racial slurs against the Jews or bomb abortion clinics. As a Christian I shudder at those things! How horrible! I love Jesus; I'm not about to hurt someone in His name - that's absolutely ridiculous and against what Jesus taught altogether! Most Christians who you don't see, however, are the people running soup kitchens. Or! Helping with Hurricane relief - did you know that almost 80% of the help in Hurricane Katrina relief was only because of Christians? Entire churches, and youth groups, and church staffs raised support, built houses, and did a lot of the clean up shoulder to shoulder with the victims! Why would Christians do that? Because they want to demonstrate love and an honest desire to help people who need it, asking nothing in return. Religious fanatics wouldn't dare build a house for someone - they would rather hurt an innocent person in the name of Religion.

I think you have a very insightful question - I just hope you meet some really cool religious people who aren't fanatics. We all aren't like that.

That just really isn't true. The fanatics just make a lot more noise. Fanatics tend to be the less educated, and the more eccentric types also. Fanaticism, at some point becomes a form of mental illness.

And please, Catholics ARE Christians, but not all Christians are Catholic. Fanatics think Catholics are not Christian (hint...hint) and I'm not Catholic.

Fanatic is how the other person perseves the religious (of any religions. I've met a few "fanatical" pagans). Normally, if a person is deeply religious and stubborn in their belief, they are labeled as fanatic. That makes me a very happy fanatic for Christ. Most labled as fanatic don't see themselves that way. It's all about perception.

Was Paul a fanatic? Stephen, James, John? Jesus? Of course we are fanatics. If our Lord who said "I am the way the truth and the life and no man can come to the Father but by me" makes the way to eternal life that narrow, how can we not be fanatics? That's how important the narrow road is. Any other road according to Jesus leads to certain destruction and eternity in Hell. If we love those around us we must certainly be fanatical in our constant admonition of the way.

Fanatics, how? I consider myself deeply religious and a strong supporter of my faith. How am I a fanatic?

It is a thin line between devout and fanatical. And also each observer has their own criteria about what is fanatical. Someone else may see the same behavior as merely devout.

We need to live the life we believe. I don't use the word fanatic.

Generalizing again, are we?

One man's fanatic could be another man's deeply religious person.

To me, a fanatic is one who converts, prosyltizes or kills for his religion.

I don't drink, do drugs, sleep around, gossip or backbite and try to fulfill my spiritual obligations.

I'm sure many consider me a fanatic. It's okay.

Thank God, I have only one to please, and that's Him. It's very freeing to have to please only One.

Successful people, even happy people, tend to be fanatically committed, fanatically fastidious about the something. (for my brother, it's fine wines and mountain climbing)
