Generally, the sugar in wine grapes will ferment out to about 13% max, giving you a dry wine. Not specific to one type of wine although usually it will be a red. Now, that doesn't not include the "Fortified" wines which have alcohol blended into them....Port, Sherry, MD20-20.

In order to answer the question properly, you must define what type of wine you are speaking of.

If you are speaking of "fortified" wines, which means that the wine is fermented and aged with cognac, brady or other liqueurs, the you could be looking at 17-20% abv (alcohol by volume), which would be 34-40 proof. Port and muscat would tend to be your heavier abv's, depending on the brand.

If you are speaking of wine in general, there is a whole different discussion. While wines in the past have ranged anywhere from 9-12 % abv (18-24 proof), nowadays, they are emerging at close to 15%! There are many thoeries why this is happening, some having to do with the yeast starins that are being used, by the wine community is wondering when it will stop. The higher the alcohol, the less youdrink and less you can taste. I have seen California begin to release some Chardonnay's the have hit about 15.5% abv.

yeah, your dry red wines usually max out at about 12-13%. Then usually just below 20% are your light fortifieds like fortified muscat (and tokay). With port and sherry above that. Some contries also count brandy and cognac as "wines" but they are mostly liquers.

Beer and wine coolers (which really have no wine in them at all anymore) are both available in a range of about 3% - 6%. You will likely get much sicker much faster playing games with wine coolers because they have a lot of sugar in them. Bert
