As Krishna said in Gita when ever the balance of right and wrong
changes reducing the right and increasing the wrong Vishnu incarnates as an avtar or a sage or saint who restores the balance. Srimad bhagavatam tells us about the 24 avataras of Vishnu of which 10 are most popular. In his first avtar he was born as Kapila as son of Kardama rishi and made the sankhya satra. He had taken the form of haya greeva (the horse form also)
In recent times he came as chaitanya and sri Rama krishna.
even Buddha was supposed to be one of hi avtars.
