Responses to a question I posted yesterday got me thinking: Do you believe that you are a good host? Why, or why not?

I'll start: I'd give myself a B+. I pick up the living room, being sure to remove anything embarrassing (underwear, cat puke, Uncle Earl). I always serve tea in the good tea set, and usually bake something in advance. I put music on in the background, and try my best to pick something the guest will like. Usually I comb my hair.

What grade would you give yourself?

Thanks for playing the game!

I would give myself A+

I believe that we should show respect to our guests and make them feel as welcome as possible. I do this by:
(1) I clean WHOLE house to make my home presentably clean and fresh for guest. This includes living room, kitchen, bathrooms, guest room and our bedrooms
(2) No laundry must be evident
(3) I decorate the house according to the season (Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.) or if no real "season," I choose a theme and decorate (nothing too expensive, but it must be cheerful)
(4) I plan what to serve food and refreshment-wise. Most should be home-cooked (I am a good cook), but some may be store-bought such as ice-cream, or chips
(5) I serve food and beverages only in the best dishware and glassware I possess
(6) I make sure that the dinner (or lunch) table is absolutely gorgeous
(7) I make sure that I am NOT too tired to be chirpy, and witty and all-so attentive as the host by the time my guests arrive (this means preparation days ahead)
(8) I make sure that the children have a separate entertainment in a room by themselves attended older members of my family if not i look in on them now and again. Keep kids away from the guests - unless it is a Christmans part

And this is why I don't entertain TOO often!!! ha ha ha

I do all mentioned above, make sure the kids are clean, and that their rooms are picked up, with toy accessible, especially if there are kids coming. I clean the bathroom the morning of guests arriving, I dust the same morning. I make sure that there are no allergies, and or any real major food aversions.
Coffee is on. And I reallly make toooooo much food. There is always leftovers, but this too is good, as I wont feel much like cooking the next day.
Preparation.
I think that is a good host. B+ as well, with bonus two points for the next day's meal.
:)

I'd give myself an A-. Because no matter how much planning I do, at the last minute I think of something else I should have done. But the guests never notice, and have a great time and enjoy the company and dinner.

It's like planning a wedding. You might have forgotten one tiny detail, but the guests never know. My downfall is that I tend to want to keep everything flowing in my kitchen and taking care of the food details, so I don't get to talk and mingle so much.

Even tho I love to have people over, I am not a good hostess. Sure I clean my house up with picking up toys and getting rid of the ring in the potty but.... when it comes to conversation forget it. I can't seem to get folks into seeming like they are having a good time. When I go to other peoples house people are laughing and talking. I can't seem to get a drinks out fast enough. Between the cooking and keeping the kids out the way and happy, I just can't keep up. I would get a D for sure. To bad because I really love to have people over. The food is always good though, I am a good cook.

I think I am an awesome hostess. I would give myself an A-. I make sure to have the food/beverages that my guest/s prefer. I do everything in my power to make them feel comfortable and welcome. I think it is inconsiderate to have guests and not be prepared for them.
