Hi Katrine...I've trained both my housecats in a few months and many of my clients cats/kittens as well. It certainly takes a serious commitment once you begin and a lot of patience. Some cats learn on average in about 3 months whereas others up to 9 - 18 months depending on their age and their owner's dedication.

Both my cats also can flush, but I block the handle when I'm not home because if there are any health problems for example like blood in the stool I won't know since they've flushed the evidence.

Litter Kwitter is one of the better excellent toilet training systems currently available aside from Feline Evolution. The other toilet training kits are flimsy making if feel unstable for for some heavier cats to learn to use. Here's a cute and fun video of a cat using Litter Kwitter: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2647927142627159521&q=toilet+trained+cat

I was tempted, until I read the following article:

*******************
Scooping the litter box each day has a highly beneficial side effect: it allows you to frequently monitor key aspects of your cat’s health. While the litter box contents certainly don’t present a complete picture of your cat’s health, they nonetheless are quite revealing and in some cases function as an "early warning system" for serious illnesses or stress-related problems.

When you perform your daily litter box chores, start off by taking a look at what’s in the box. If the urine clumps are half-dollar-sized or smaller, or if the number of clumps is markedly higher than usual, your cat may be urinating with increasing frequency, which could be a sign of a bladder infection or an early symptom of diabetes, kidney failure, or several other conditions. If you see any blood mixed in with the clumps, contact your veterinarian or after-hours clinic right away — your cat may have a dangerous blockage.

Note the consistency and color of the stools. They should be firm but not exceedingly hard and brittle. Stools that are too hard may indicate that your cat is constipated; stools that are too soft are usually a sign that your cat has diarrhea. Both of these conditions can occur in healthy cats on an occasional basis, but persistent cases merit a consultation with your veterinarian.

They stools should be dark brown in color. A departure from this that goes on for more than a day could mean anything from poor diet to liver disease. If there is any blood in the stool, your cat may have bleeding in the lower digestive tract.

Once you incorporate monitoring the litter box contents into your daily routine, you will become quite proficient at recognizing what’s normal for your cat, and at noticing anything out of the ordinary.

If you live with many cats, it’s more challenging to interpret litter box contents, but doing so is still valuable. Even knowing that one cat is off-kilter with respect to his or her litter box usage can be a great advantage.

The value of being able to examine your cat’s litter box output should not be underestimated. You lose this daily health check when your cat uses the toilet instead of the litter box.

It is possible. I have seen people use just a simple litter box, in the bathroom, by the toilet. They slowly raise the level of the litter box, then move the litter box over the toilet. After awhile, they remove the litter box all together.

Yeah this is possible, my friend has a lot of cats and many of them have been trained to use his toilet. Not all cats are smart enough to be trained in this way but it is possible with perserverance, and a good idea too, doesn't upset the neighbours like my cat does by peeing and worse in their gardens.

When my grandparents moved to a new condo and could only have one cat due to the litter issue, the toilet trained all four of their cats in a pretty short time.
They were in their 70's and they did it, so I am sure you can too. It is actually pretty easy and most "methods" are the same.
Go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hi,
this may sound odd . I have seen a cat pee in a toilet, using all four of its legs to balance itself.
The cat would often pee at the side of the toilet, when the owner was away .So the owner said to the cat on several occasions you have the right room to do it in, please use the toilet...Amazingly one day they caught the cat doing just as they asked!!...although they never saw it do it again.
It was not intentionaly trained to do so.

I had a cat, once, who just did it naturally! I'd never even thought of her doing it there; but, I've put other cats up there and they won't do it.

I'll certainly try the one mentioned above, to keep raising the litter box 'til it's potty height, the put it on the toilet seat.

Thanks for the tip.

no - but I have seen it done! It seems so me cats are ultra clever and realise what toilets are for - some even learn to flush! But it is a bit dangerous for them when you think about it, so best stick to the litter tray!

I found it quite easy to train my cat to use the toilet however he never could quite wipe his ars* properly. I used to threaten to take his cigars off him but had to give up in the end as he told me one night over a bottle of scotch "that maybe cats just arnt meant to wipe there ars*s!"

I have heard a lot of people who have been successful at it. Personally, I wouldn't do that with 1 bathroom and a boyfriend and 2 cats, I would never get a chance at the bathroom. lol!
